Me. Feli>wtck. a Greyite, has been beaten by Mr. Bain, an Oppositionist. Not by an alarming majority, it is true; but "a miss m as good as » mile," and the paltry majority of two as effectually shuts Mr. Feidwick out of Parliament as would a majority of a hundred. c think that, all things considered, Mr. Feidwick polled very well. His opponent is an old and rejected Invcrcargillite, whilst he is only a new arrival. Mr. Bain has made a position for himself by the exercise of industry and business tact. This circumstance, together with his long residence in ' the district, has made him many fast friends, whose personal friendship will withstand the trying influences of political differences, for political feeling is not so strong in the Colony now a3 it will yet become. Mr. Bain's victory may therefore be viewed as a victory for his friends rather than a defeat of Mr. Feldwick's political supporters. That Mr. Feidwick should have been so successful aa to get into Parliament during the last election for Invercargill, and now so very nearly beat Mr. Bain, would appear extraordinary were it not remembered that Mr. Feidwick has supported a policy which is now eminently popular ; and we venture to express an opinion that unequal 33 Mr. Feidwick appears to be to Mr. Bain in mental calibre, the late election would have uone in bis favor had he not, with the enthusiasm of a slavey with a new broom, attempted to do too much. His efforts in connection with tf»e \\ ellington mass meeting wcrt not appreciated, for actions which would W received with favor from Sir George Grey, would create disgust when aped by a man of Mr. Feldwick's stamp. Mr. Feidwick lias himself to thank for his beating, and, if he should ever get into Parliament again, we have no doubt that the lesson will prove salutary.
