Wellington, August 31. Mr. C. R. Carter retires from contesting the Wairarapa. Mr. Hunter met his constituents last night, and received a vote of confidence. Mr. Levin also addressed the electors, and a vote of thanks was carried. Captain Kenny was returned for Picton to-day unopposed. September 1. G. Hunter, \V. H. Levin, R. Greenfield, and \V. Hutchinson were nominated for the two city seats to-day. About 700 persons were present. All the candidates spoke at some'length. A show of hands resulted as follows :—Levin, 150 ; Hunter, 100 ; Greenfield, 80 ; and Hutchinson, 70. Hutchinson demanded a poll. Timaru, August 30. Mr. Tunibull obtained a vote of confidence at Pleasant Point last night. Chbistchubch, August 30. The Heathcote nomination took place at noon to-day. The Hon. J. T. Fisher and Mr. J. A. Morgan were nominated. The show of hands was declared by the Returning Officer to be in favor of the Hon. Mr. Fisher. A poll was demanded on behalf of Mr. Morgan. New Plymouth, August 30. The Egmont nomination took place at Omata toll-bar to-day. Major Atkinson and Mr. Sherwood were nominated. The latter being a stranger in that part of the district, had to trust to Major Atkinson's supporters to propose and second him, which was done. The show of hands was in favor of Major Atkinson. Mr. Sherwood demanded a poll. Dunedin, August 30. Sir George Grey was waited on at Milton to-day by a deputation of Liberal electors, condoling with him, and condemning the Opposition. Gisborne, August 30. Mr. Morris received a vote of confidence at Opotiki. Mr. M'Donald (Government) addressed the Gisborne electors last night, and received an enthusiastic vote of confidence. Napier, August 30. At the nomination for Clive yesterday Messrs. Orrnond and Sheelian were proposed. The show of hands resulted in 30 for Ormond, and 27 for Sheehan. The nomination of Mr. Sheelian was a great surprise to many, as the first intimation that he would be brought forward appeared in that morning's Herald. Mr. Russell, at a meeting in the Theatre Royal, referring to the Electoral Bill, said that Mr. Reynolds, Commissioner of Customs, in 1875 introduced a Bill conferring manhood suffrage with a twelve months' clause. That Bill was rejected by a majority of eight. Among those

who voted against it were Grey, Sheehan, Macandrew, Thomson, Ballance, Fitzherbert, and Brown. Among those who voted for it were Atkinson, Richardson, M'Lean, and Bowen. Mr. Rees, at a meeting of the Liberal Association at the Theatre Royal, referred to the same subject, saying that Grey and other members of the Ministry had voted against it because it was not sufficiently liberal. Mr. Ormond, at his meeting, received a vote of confidence by a small majority, no amendment being moved. The majority present did not vote. Nelson, August 30.
