(FKK PRESS ASSOCIATION). WELLINGTON. August 29. It is understood that the City Council have decided to invite tenders from all the banks for the raising of the new waterworks loan of L 130,000.
The Mount Cook prison, in part of which the Maori prisoners are confined, had a narrow escape from destruction by fire this afternoon. A cauldron of pitch upset, and immediately paused a fire, but it was extinguished before any damage was done. August 30. A deputation fr.om the Liberal Associawaited on. Mr. Greenfield this morning, asking him to retire from contesting the city seat. Mr. Greenfield replied that he would leave the matter in the hands of the "committee. John Brown, sailmaker, of the Halcione, was to-day sentenced to one month's imprisonment for stabbing the boatswain. Henry Lovering was charged with embezzling stores to the value of L 44. He was dismissed on technical grounds. A fresh information will be laid. CHRISTCHURCH. August 29. The cylinder sunk in the Waimakariri was experimented on yesterday, with satisfactory results, so far as flow of water was concerned. More than 400 gallons per minute was afforded.
