Day by day the political fever is growing hotter. The electors are awakening, and there are signs that there will be no cause to complain of political apathy so far as the impending- elections are concerned. In another column, a correspondent hints that although he will support a Grey candidate, he would prefer one that would favor Bible-reading in schools and the amendment of the Education Act so as to empower School Committees to appoint teachers. If Bible-reading in schools, without any reservations, were to be made a test question, candidates would be placed in such a position that they would either have to prevaricate to gain friends, or speak their mind and lose them. Rightly or wrongly, the tide of public feeling is in opposition to the reinstatement of denominational education. The brewers, too, are on the war path. They have not forgotten that the Beer Tax Bill was introduced during the Grey administration, and their antipathy is so bitter thereat that they show signs of opposing Government supporters for their interference with what they conceive to be their rights, however much they may approve of them in other respects. We hear that a meeting of the brewing and kindred interests was held to-day, at the Royal Hotel, for the purpose of organising opposition to Government candidates. What with the Bible-reading, Brewing, and Catholic interests, candidates for Parliamentary honors will have their work to satisfy the electors.
