WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The following is the conclusion of our report of yesterday's meeting of the County Council : The tender of Mr. H. Wallace (L 507 9s) for constructing a bridge, and forming the road from Maheno Railway Station to Island Stream, was accepted. The tenders received for repairs to the Kakanui bridge being in excess of the Engineer's estimate, it was decided to call for fresh tenders. The Inspector reported as follows : I have the honor to forward report for tho month of July, 1579. The new road at Trotter's is in danger of being undermined by the creek, which washeß against the bank in time of flood. I would suggest that a rough strong pitching be built. There is abundance of stone near, and the cost would not exceed L2O. The gravelling contract at Hillgrove has been completed. Contracts Nos. 69 and 70 are in fair progress. As my time has been almost wholly occupied with these contracts, I have been unable to give much attention to other parts of the county. The formation and gravelling on the road to the Otepopo Railway Station is in progress, as also that on the Tables, Awamoko riding. i The roads are in fair order. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Murcott, to call for tenders for constructing a culvert in Hampden, and for pitching the banks at Trotter's Creek. The following report fro.n the engineers was read and approved : In accordance with instructions to us by letter dated the 12th July, we have to report : Ist. He drainage from new culvert at Richmond's Crossing. It is doubtful if tho Railway Engineer could have seen the old culvert, it be;.ig a wooden box, very probably grown over with grass. We have taken a few levels along the drain on the east side of the road north from the culvert. By deepening said drain about one foot for a distance ot three chains the drainage would be taken to the next culvert crossing fhe railway. The work could be done by tho surfacemen. 2nd. Drawings and specifications have been forwarded for reinstating the Kakanui bridge ; also for erection of bridge, culverts, and formation of new road between the Maheno railway station and the new bridge at Island Stream, which is the connecting link with the Incholme main road. The repairing of the lower Island Stream bridge will be proceoded with at an early date. 3rd. Re metalling portion of road between Wellington-street, Teaneralci, and the railway siding. There being sufficient metal for this work lying close at hand, the surfacemen have been put on to re-form this portion of the road and spread the metal. Accounts amounting to LII3G 19s 7d were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
