Simpson has decided to contest Roslyn with Mr. Driver. It is said Mr. James Macassey will come forward for Dunedin. Messrs. Stewart, Oliver, and Dick will address the elctors next week, and so will Messrs. Macandrew and Green for Port Chalmers. A numerously attended meeting of the friends of the Hon. J. Macandrew was held in the Provincial Hotel, Port Chalmers, yesterday evening, when it was decided that a Committee should be formed to secure his return to the House of Representatives. Mr. David Law was chosen chairman of the Committee. Mr. J. P. Armstrong has been asked to become a candidate for Collingwood in Sir G. Grey's interest, and will most probably comply. Auckland, August 14. Mr. P. Erhenfreid stands for the Thames in the Liberal interest. Mr. Brodie is expected to announce himself shortly. Mr. Blakely, the Mayor of Onehunga, has been asked to contest Onehunga against Mr. o'E.orke as a Grey candidate. He has asked for time for replyMr. F. A. Whitaker will probably be a candidate for "Waipa. August 15. Mr. Reader Wood is out for Waitemata in the Grey interest. Christchurch, August 14. Several deputations have waited on Mr. J. E. Brown, begging him to stand for Ashley. In reply, Mr. Brown said that domestic affairs had caused him to make his mind up to retire altogether from Parliament, and, besides, he could not stand, being bound by a promise not to. He was then told that he .vould be nominated and probably elected whether he liked it or no, whereupon he said that if his friends would rele.tse him from his promise he would consent to serve once more. Some of the candidates for Ashley are now expected to withdraw. A meeting of Conservatives is being held to-night, to secure the return of the three present members. There seems to be a vagueness about Mr. Moorhonso which is not easily understood. His name is bracketed- with Messrs. Stevens and Richardson in the Conservative advertisements, but a requisition has been sent to him from Ashley by a number of people, and it is authoritatively said he will stand for that district. It is also rumored that he will be a3ked to stand for Geraldine. Mr. Moorhouse himself has made no sign yet. Mr. Ivess is not rjoing to stand for Coleridge, and the Hon. John Hall announces himself for Selwyn. Both Messrs. "Wright and Hart, the Coleridge- candidates, are antiGreyites. Later. At the Conservative meeting to-night, Mr. Moorhouse definitely stated that he should withdraw from Christchurch, to give Sir George Grey a chance of testing the public feeling. This is understood to mean that he has resolved to stand for Ashley. A section of the people up North look upon his candidature unfavorably, as they would prefer any local man. The meeting to-night, though supposed to be a one-sided one, contained a good many Liberals, as the speakers (amongst whom were Messrs, Richardson, Stevens, and Moorhouse) were frequently interrupted by cries of What about land-sharking ?" and similar queries. Two committees were appointed to further the interests of the party, and canvass for votes for the two men. Greymouth, August 14. Mr. D. M'Lean is a candidate for Grey Yalley. InvercargHiL, August 14. Mr. Shanks, the only candidate yet announced for Mataura, met the electors at Appleby to-night. He announced himself in favor of the present Ministry, and received a vote of confidence. Timaru, August-14. Mr. Wakefield addresses the Temuka electors to-morrow night. No other candidate is yet announced, Mr. Turnbull addresses the Timaru electors on Monday evening. Mr. Woollcombe is formally announced in the Conservative interest to oppose him. "Wanganui, August 14. Committees are being formed for Sir W. Fox both at Wanganui and Rangitikei, and the elections are expected to be closely contested, New Plymouth, August 14. Captain Skeet opposes Colonel Trimble for the Grey and Bell district. Napier, August 14. A requisition, asking Mr. Sheehan to contest Clive with Mr. Ormond, has been numerously signed, and those who should know state that Mr. Sheehan will probably stand. For the Napier electorate,, the only candidates definitely announced are Captain Russell and Mr. Sutton, in the interest of the Opposition, and Mr. Buchanan on the independent Government ticket. Paimerston North, August 14. Last evening Messrs. Snelson and Halcombe appeared before the largest ! meeting ever held at Palmerston. Mr. S. Snelson gave Mr. Halcombe liberty to address the meeting, which he did in a speech two hours' long. Then Mr. Snelson asked the meeting whether they wished him to stand or retire in Mr. Halcombe's favor. He was quite willing to contest, to the end. Mr. Johnson arrived yesterday afternoon, but although advised of the meeting did not put in an appearance.
