SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.
(from our own correspondents.) DUNEDIN. August 15. There was a proposal under consideration to amalgamate the Commercial and Union Building Societies, and Mr. M. W. Hawkins, the Secretary to the latter, was requested by his directors to furnish a list of his liabilities and assets. This was not forthcoming, but yesterday he called on Mr. Nation, the Company's solicitor, with a statement showing a deficit of LI4OO, at the same time handing to him a box containing strychnine, which he said he contemplated using. As a result of the investigation of the books by the directors, he was locked up. It transpires that he is a defaulter to the Kaitangata Coal Company and the Church Society. The charges of embezzlement were partially gone into to-day. Bail was refused. Ten insolvencies were filed this week. All were small estates except that of John B. Lukea, hotelkeeper, Dunedin, whose liabilities were L4IG2, and assets, L 4584.
A warrant has been issued against Alex. Grant, a clerk in the Crown Lands Oflice, for forgery. Mr. Hogg, President of the Tailors' Operative Society, is a candidate for Dunedin in the working men's interest.
