Falconer (Chairman), Fleming, Greenfield, Allen, Steward, M'Farlane, Ronayne, Collis, Mollison, and Hardy (Secretary). As, however, the Secretary again omitted to .rj V e our reporter an intimation of the fact that the meeting was to be held, we are unable to do more than give a brief outline of the business transacted. After the minutes had been confirmed, a report from the barrackmaster was read, and the report of the Visiting Committee was read and adopted, with the exception of that portion referring to the fencing and cultivating of the Society's grounds, which was ordered to stand over. The following letter was read : —" The President, North Otago Lenevolcnt Society.—Sir,—l beg to tender my resignation as a member of Commutee. I cannot brinsT my mind to swallow tiie extiaordinary and unwarrantable assumptions of the Treasurer. He humbugs the Secretary, muddles the books, confuses the accounts, throws dust in the eyes of the Committee, treats with supercilious contempt all subcommittees, and so long as a portion of the members arc prepared to toady to him, I see no prespeet of any reformation being effected in the management of the Society. I cannot therefore any longer remain f i member without losing my self-respect. —I am, , S. Gunw." After a somewhat lengthy and warm discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Fleming, that Mr, Gibbs be requested to attend at a special meeting of the Society on Monday next, and explain the charges contained in his letter, his resignation meanwhile to remain on the table. The following curious announcements (.--ays the N.Z. Maii) posted oa the door of an office in one of the Chambers of A\ ellmgton, form a species of conundrum to a good many commercial men, but the latter notice is evidently the handiwork of some wag : "Gone to ; back in three days/' " When you return, please call and see the bailiff, who has seven summonses waiting for you."

We leam from the Timaru Herald that a Sab-Committee has been appointed by the

Timaru Chamber of Commerce to compile a list of the vessels which have entered the port of Timaru during the past ten years, with a list of their tonnage; also, a list of the casualties during the same period. The object of preparing such statistics is to rectify the gross mis-statements contained in letters forwarded by Dunedin ; and Christchurch merchants to the Underwriters' Association in London regarding the Timaru and Oamaru ports.

In the illustrated London News of May Ist, which came to hand by last mail, there is a woodcut of the Wilson Hall, which is to be built in connection with the Melbourne University by Sir Samuel Wilson, a member of the Upper House of Victoria, at a cost of L 37,000. Our principal object in drawing attention to this work now is to inform our readers that the Melbourne agent for the Oamaru Stone Company is the conti'actor, and that Oamaru stone will enter largely into its composition, in conjunction with Sydney freestone. Already 6000 feet of stone has left here for this building. We congratulate the people of Victoria on their good sense in having fonned a proper estimate of the beautiful and durable stone which abounds in this district, and feel proud that it is to be used in the erection of such a monument of its excellence.

We take the following from the Huddersfield Chronicle :—That was a charitable prayer of a Primitive Methodist at Runcorn the other day. Having alluded to the bad times, he proceeded : "Oh, Lord, they tell me that it's all through an old Jew who lives in London. Slay Jixrri, O Lprd 1 If I slay him, they'll hang me : but do Thou slay him, O Lord, for they can't hang Ihee." The concern of this very earnest gentleman for his own neck is not less manifest than his revolting notions on the justifiableness of murder. He seems perfectly willing to slay Lord Beaconsfield, only fear of an introduction to Marwood acts as a deterrent. As the hangman's halter is the physical application of law, and the Runcorn gentleman dreads it much more than he hates Lord Beaconsfield, we may reasonably conclude that the display of physical force in upholding the rights of the nation is not without effect. What hanging is to the Runcorn Radical, that has been Lord Beasonsfield's exhibition of the material resources of the country to Russia. Respecting this extraordinary prayer, it is only one instance among many of the quantity of dirty linen some people wish God to wash for them. All the nasty jobs they dislike doing themselves they desire to be performed in a supernatural manner. We advise Lord Beaconsfield to keep out of the \yay of lightning this summer, else if lie happens to be smitten dead with electricity, there is sure to he much rejoicing that the prayers of faithful Radicals have been answered.
