Three of the native prisoners were charged at the Resident Magistrate s Court this morning, and committed for trial at the next Supreme Court sittings at Wellington, bail being allowed the prisoners in LSOO, and two sureties of L 250 each. The native prisoners who arrived from New Plymouth yesterday were, along with forty more, sent on to Dunedin in the Hinemoa this afternoon. A lad named Alfred Byer received a nasty wound in the thigh last night by the explosion of a dynamite cartridge which he had in his pocket. DUNEDIN. July 31. A dividend at the rate of 8 per cent, per annutn was declared at the hall-yearly meeting of the proprietors of the Colonial Bank yesterday. The usuaj compliments were paid to the directors and officers of the bank. The amount carried to the reserve fund was L3OOO, and the new account of the profit and loss account was commenced with L 2045 18s Id. The total sum to the credit of the reserve fund is L 45,000. PORT CHALMERS. August 1. Otto Brown, a seaman belonging to the ship Benares, fell down the forehold, a distance of 20 feet, this morning. When picked up, it was found that no bones were broken, but he had received a scalp wound, split his nose, and severely cut his lip. The wounds were sewn up by Dr. Hoskings. Arrived —Thurso, barque, from Lyttelton. Sailed—Ladybird, for Lyttelton. AUCKLAND. July 31. At the annual meeting of the Thames Gold Mining Company, the directors, in
their report, regretted that the returns from the mines prevented any dividends being declared. L3OOO still remains at interest at 6 per cent. Mr. J. L. Wilson was re-elected director. The half-yearly meeting of the Union Sash and Door Company was: held to-day. The net profit for the half year is L 4418. A dividend of 15 per cent, was declared, instead of the usual 20 per cent. The directors attribute the falling-off in receipts to depressed trade, to the abolition of the impost duty on timber, and to the irregular supply of timber. The assets now amout to L 70,000. At the half-yearly meeting of the Gas Company, a dividend of 15 per cent, per annum was declared. Mr. J. M. Dargaville is going to stand against all-comers for Marsden. CHRISTCHURCH. July 31. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received advices of the arrival of the Western Monarch at London, from Port Chalmers. The births in Christchurch and suburban districts during July were ISS, against 200 during the same month of last year ; the marriages were ol against 32 ; and the deaths 74 against 50. A wo.man named Lowe, the wife of a farmer at Weedon's, a few miles south of Christchurch, has been missing from her home since yesterday morning. For some time past she had been complaining of her head. She took no money or clothes with her. A meeting of unemployed men was held this morning in Cathedral Square. The attendance numbered about 100. The men were addressed at some length by a speaker, who insisted on their getting work. At the suggestion of the speaker, an adjournment was made ta the Immigration officer, but (is (Mr. March) was away at the Addington Barracks with the Orari'a immigrants, it was decided to wait upon that gentleman upon another occasion. GISBORNE. July 31Peter Lorry, a bankrupt, was committed for trial at the District Court to-day, for concealing property from the trustees, NELSON. July 31. News just received from Collingwood by steamer states that on the 21st instant two men named Peterson and Newport were engaged in felling a tree at Takaki, when it fell in the contrary direction. Newport narrowly escaped injury, while Peterson's leg was broken in two places. TIMARU. July 31. There is no doubt now but that Smith ancl Morrison, who have been missing from Pulesby station since Thursday last, have perished in the snow. Smith was one of the owners of the station, and 19 years old. Morrison was shepherd, and leaves a wife and five children unprovided for. Forty-eight births, twenty deaths, and seven marriages were registered at Timaru during the month of July. Mr. J. C. Sutter was the only person nominated ta=day for the office of Mayor.
