PRESIDENT'S CUP, The running for the President's Cup commenced to-day. A start was made just opposite the Totara gate, but owing to the very heavy frost, a commencement of the running was not made until halfpast ten. Very little interest was taken in the meeting, about 50 persons being present, including about 20 horsemen. Patch and Wildrake were the first pair slipped, and a long course ensued. Wildrake had much the best of it at the start, : turning the hare in beautiful style, but the little white slut got in and won, ; although most of the people present thought the course should have been given to Wildrake. Hock and Gaiuelia were the ; next pair in the slips, and, after a long < walk in search of a hare, the pair were I started to a strong one, which took over a 5 hill, and very little of the course was seen. 1 it was decided in favor of Hock, thg hare i getting away. Speculation and Gazelle had i a long course, the slut showing the best c form, and winning, although the dog ran 1 well. The course between Gyp and Ring- 1 leader was a very unsatisfactory one, the e latter making right back for his master, r Gyp doing a long course on her own t account, the hare getting scot free. Queen c I Bee ran a bye, Bruce having hurt his 1 I foot. Queen Bee ran a beautiful course, r turning her hare several times. Ro- a feree and St. Albans wert» tho next c pair put together, and ran an undecided f course. Verbena and Lyric ran a long c course, Verbena, having it all her own v way, and winning easily. Kathleen and t Wrangler were then put in the slips, brj from start to finish I£athlseji ha 4 all her j own way, working the hare beautifully, r
and never allowing her opponent to score a, point. Referee and St. Albans were then placed in the slips to run their undecided course. After a long hunt for a hare, the pair were slipped, and by far the best course of the day took place. Both dogs worked splendidly, turning the hare in beautiful style, Referee eventually killing. It must have been a difficult matter for the judge to. decide this course, as the dogs appeared to work so evenly. Juliet and Skiddaw Lass, the last pair on the card, were then placed together, and after some time had been spent in looking for a hare, a capital start was made, resulting in favor of Juliet, although Skiddavi- Lass made some fast running. The Aral; ties were then commenced by and Hock being placed in the slips, and a splendid course ensued, the judge giving it in favor of Hock. The decision was nor a very popular one, as Patch gave her opponent a clean go-by. Kathleen and Gazelle were the next pair, and after a long course, the hare taking over a hill, is was decided in favor of Gazelle, Kathleen never showing i n the fro it. Verbena and Gvp ran"'a very even course, it. eu] <r decided in favor oi' tile latter.
