WELLINGTON. July IC. The ship Pareora, from London, is at the Heads. She brings, a large general cargo ancl several passengers. The Merchant Shipping and Underwriter's Association, under date London, July 9, reports the following arrivals : Auckland, from Port Chalmers, April 19'; Orthes, from Lyttelton, April IG. GREYMOUTH. July IG. Yesterday afternoon Peter Sloane, a miner working at Maori Creek, through the breaking of the rope attached to a hydraulic, was struck by the of tile windlass and thrown into the New River, a distance of 30 foot. Ho died last night. WANGANUI. JulylG._ A man in the employment of Mr. W. Somcrs picked up a Worcester sauce bottle on the beach, and on opening it discovered a small scrap of blue paper, with the words written—" Strathnaver on lire oil' Pally Beach, April 29, IS7G. Heavy sea running.—W. Yv'allek, chief officer." It will be remembered that the Strathnaver left Sydney about the date mentioned, and was never heard of. The papers appear to be a genuine production. AUCKLAND. July 10. At a meeting the North Island Railway Employes' Provident Society, the Auckland branch's report shows a bank balance of L 304 Nathaniel Stafford, aged GO years, while intoxicated, endeavored to enter the house of Mrs. Drummond. She pushed him on the step, and, falling on the stones, he fractured his skull. It is feared that the injury will terminate fatally. INVERCARGILL. * Jy 17. _ Messrs. G. Goodwillie and J. W. Bain were proposed yesterday for the Mayoraltj 7 of Invercargill. The latter is untried in Municipal matters, but the former has been councillor for seven years, and has worked hard for the town. The poll takes place on the 21st July.
