€> (from our own correspondents.) ] DUNEDIN. July 9. Captain Baldwin has retired from the contest for the seat in the House in favor of Reeves, the secular candidate, j The candidates now are Messrs. Reeves and Stewart. July 10. Murray lias been committed for trial. He was in receipt of L4OO a year. The magistrate refused bail until steps could be taken vesting the custody of his child in some guardian. Mr. Stewart's chances of election are considered rosy. Mr. Reeves is the only other candidate. Mr. Stewart has announced himself as opposed to the Government. There are only two common and one special jury case fixed for the civil sittings of the Supreme Court. The special jury case is an action by Solomon, music dealer, of Oamaru, against the South British Insurance Company to recover a claim on an insurance policy. Mr. James Gordon Grant was proposed as a candidate for the vacant seat in Parliament, but the nomination was simply a farce. The show of hands was in favor of Mr. Reeves.

At the Supreme Court, to-day, Oolin TSTitnon, for larceny, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. CHRISTCHURCH. July 10. A man named Craig is charged with obtaining goods under false pretences, and Mary "Halliday with obtaining L3O under false pretences. They are remanded till Monday.
