MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of the Council took place last evening, when there were present—his Worship the Mayor, Councillors Humphrey, Gibbs, Procter, Headland, and Mainland. Tile Secretary to the Education Board wrote asking if the Council would assist ill getting a Bill through Parliament with the object of effecting certain exchanges for a site for the ne-.v South School. The request was ordered to be complied with. A letter was read from the Secretary to the Harbor Board pointing out to the Council the dilapidated state of the fence at the south end of liumbcr-street, and asked if the Council had taken steps to repair its portion. lie had been instructed to keep the portion belonging to the Board in repair, and would be glad to confer with a Committee appointed for the purpose by the Council. The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. Mr. Ogilvie, of the Crown Lands Department, wrote stating that the Crown grants for Municipal endowment and other lands would tee forwarded for the Governor's signature in a few days. A letter from the Under-Secretary for Lauds was read, suggesting that the recreation reserves should be brought under the Public Domains Act.—The letter was referred to the Mayor for
reply. Permission v;&.granted to Mr. John M'Dowell to erect an iron addition to his premises in Thames-street. A.:i application from Mr. Jarvis White, for permission to put a drain under the footpath opposite his premises, was referred to the engineer, with power to act.

John Cogvin, Thomas Morris, and Shrimski and Moss, for reductions in the rateable value of their properties destroyed by lire, were read, and it was resolved to allow a rebate of one-third of the total assessment on the properties burned. Letters having been read from Messrs. IJ.islop and Creagli, with reference to Mr. Grant's claim in connection with the Waterworks, the Mayor, Cr. Gilibs, and the Engineer were appointed a Committee to deal with the matter, under the advice of the Council's solicitors. A letter from the Engineer was read .with reference to damage done by overflow of the water-race owing to the flood, and i.lie Committee appointed on the last matter was empowered to deal with the subject. A complaint from Mr. J. T. Hughes of his premises being flooded was referred to the engineer to report. A letter was received from the proprietors of the North Otago Times, applying to the Council for payment of an account incurred by the provisional directors of the Gas Company.—lt- was -resolved—" That the writers of the letter be informed that the Council does not consider that it has anything to do with vise matter, and therefore cannot recognise the claim."
Councillor Gibbs presented a petition signed by nine ratepayers resident in Eden street, complaining of the condition of the roauway and footpaths.—lt was resolved that the petitioners be informed that the matter will have attention as soon as the state of the funds will permit. It was resolved, in accordance with a recommendation by the town inspector, that notice be given to the owner of section 24, block XXV., to have the creek running through the said section cleaned out. Accounts were passed for payment, viz., Ordinary account, L 122 15s 3d ; gasworks iiccount, L2l 6s Gd ; reserves account, Ll2 ICs ; waterworks account, L 123 Gs Od ; total, L2BO 17s Cd. The Council then rose.
