The It.-iilway Department expect to open up through communication with Invercargill and Chnstchurch on Monday next. The principal damage done by the recent floods is the destruction of a 70fcefc span of si bridge on the Outrain branch line, which will have' to be replaced. Tli is work will occupy four or live weeks. It is said that Mr. W. D. Stewart contests the seat for the city under the auspices, it is understood, of the Bible in Schools Association. PORT CHALMERS. July 3. Sailed Dunpotar Castle, ship, for Newcastle ; Hawua, s.s., for the North ; Anna, ketch, for Timr.ru. CHPJBTOHUBCH. July 3. Communication with Rangiora oil the north line was restored to-day. One effect of the recent flood in the Waiinakariri has been to scour out a channel 11 feet deep in the north branch, which will save the Harbor Board a lot of expense and trouble. TIMARU. July 3. An inquiry was held to-day re the wreck of the biigantine Abkar, but no further particulars than tho3e already telegraphed were elicited, with the exception that the Harbormaster stated that he warned the captain and officers directly the vessel arrived that the cables were too light foi the open roadstead. At the Harbor Board to-day, a letter was read from the Attorney-General stating that the Board could not legally devote any part of its endowment funds to purchase a steam launch, and the project was therefore abandoned. A .letter was read from the Borough Council, asking the Board to loud them L 25,000 on security i of the waterworks debentures, the Council 1 to pay interest at 7 per cent, till the debentures were floated. The member of'
the Borough Council who presented the letter made a very piteous appeal, and said the Bo ,rd should lend the money out of brotherly feeling. Resolutions were passed to the effect that, provided the securities offered by the Council were undeniable, and that the Board had th' 6 legal power to lend money, also that the loan could be. resumed on definite-"notice being given, the Council's request be complied with. It was also resolved thai the opinion of Mr. Stout, of Dunedin, be obtained as to the safety of the investment and the legal power of the Board to lend money to the Council. AUCKLAND. July 4. Mr. Newsam, recently from Victoria, and formerly of Greeniiill Mills, Yorkshire, is here endeavoring to form a woollen manufacturing company. It is proposed to fix the capital at L 50.000, and call up L 15,000. He agrees to take a considerable share himself. Mr. Tole will address his constituents to-night. Thomas Vaughan and David Honcv were charged at the Resident Magistrate's Court witli being beneficially interested in a lottery scheme. Defendants had a peep-show, and gave prises. The case was dismissed, on the grounds that there were no blanks, consequently it was not a game of chance, and that they were not beneficially interested.
