THE OTAGO CENTRAL RAILWAY.
Dunedin, June 21. The following is a telegram from the
Mayor to the Minister of Public Works : —" Dunedin, June 20tli. Large numbers of working men are out of employment, and Mr, Blair informs me that the second section of the Ofcago Central Railway is ready, and only waits instructions from you to make a start. May I ask you to advise the engineer to commence immediately, and relieve the labor market. Most urgent.—Hknliy J. Walter. The . Hon. James Macandrew, Wellington." " Wellington, June 20. Regret to learn there are unemployed in Dunedin. I have directed the engineer in charge to commence the second section of tho StrathTaieri line by piece work, to be let to small groups of men ; and if there is any available land in the neighborhood of the railway works suitable for small homesteads of a few acres each, I have requested the same to be indicated to the Minister of Lands, who will, no doubt, give directions to have allotments surveyed at once, and placed at the disposal of such of the unemployed as may choose to form homes for themselves on suitable terms.—J. Magantvrew. His Worship the Mayor of Dunedin."
