In bankruptcy, Judge Williams suspended the certificates of William and Edward Downe3, hotelkeepers, Blueskin, and strongly advised the trustee to apply to the Court for an order, under the Fraudulent Debtors Act, to criminally prosecute. It is now snowing very hard. James White has been committed for trial for larceny as a bailee. The Mayor has yet received no reply from Mr. Stout. The Minister for Public Works has given instructions for the immediate commencement of the second section of the Otago central railway. Messrs. Cargills, Gibbs and Co. 's wool cablegram says : —The wool sales closed with an upward tendency. During the fortnight competition was animated. Prices average id to Id higher than they were at the commencement of the series. CHRISTCHURCH. June 23. Manders, who is undergoing a sentence for indecent assault, received a second flogging on Saturday. Joyce, a farmer at the Ashburton Forks, was sinking a well 180 feet deep. His mate had pulled him up to within ten feet of the surface, when the windlass capsized, and Joyce fell to the bottom, sustaining fatal injuries. A man named Michael Flynn died suddenly. He was employed on a ploughing contract for Mr. Greenwood. The passengers by the four-horse coach running between Tai Tapu and Green Park, had a narrow escape on Saturday. The whip becoming entangled in the wheel, the driver got down, and the horses started at a smart pace. The passengers managed to get out, and the horses went back to the stables, Christchurch. No damage was done. The Bella, which went ashore at Gallan's Bay, at noon on Saturday, suddenly went down at 7 p.m. The crew rushed into the mizzen ringing. A man named Hall entirely disappeared. The crew were saved by a boat of the Mary Blair. Up to last night the position of the vessel was unchanged. She belongs to Mr. C. W. Turner, and arrived a few days ago with a cargo of 520 tons of coal and 20,000 feet of iron bark. The vessel, which is a wooden one, is insured for L2OOO, and the cargo for LIOOO, in the New Zealand Insurance Co.
