MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Council was held to-day, when there were present— His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Gibbs, Familton, Praetor., Mainland, and Headland, Messrs. M'Leod (engineer), and Balmer (solicitor). The Corporation Solicitor attended with regard to an exchange of wall-lines to one of the Municipal quarries ; and was instructed to complete the necessary conveyances as requested by the Public Works Department. A report by Mr. Dennison, agreeable to instructions, was read, as to the extent to which the natural drainage on section 28, block XIII., Oamaru Survey District, had been disturbed by the waterworks operations. The report shelved that Grant's Creek formed the channel or outlet for most of the water now running into the tunnel. This would appear that Mr. Grant's water-right had been interfered with. The report concluded by recommending that a well should be sunk to a depth of 40ft, at which it was believed that a stream of water would be found equal to that lost by the operations at the tunnel, and which could easily be elevated to the old channel by means of a cup mill and pump. The estimated cost of the well would be between L9O and LIOO.

The Mayor said it was doubtful whether Mr. Grant would agree to this mode of settling the dispute. On the motion of Cr. Headland, seconded by Cr. Gibbs, it was resolved, That Mr. Grant be furnished with a copy of the report, and that he be offered the sum of L2OO in settlement of all claims, this offer to be paid on the part of the Council, and if rejected to be deemed to be without prejudice as regards .any future proceedings. A letter from the Hon. Secretary of the Coursing Club was read, asking that in view of the Waterloo Gup meeting being a Colonial event in coursing circles, the necessary steps might be taken to have the 2ith inst. proclaimed a bank and a general liolidy. The matter was left in the hands of the Mayor to deal with. _

The Council then went into Committee to consider matters in connection with the waterworks loan.
