WELLINGTON.
May 30. In the District Court to-day, the case of Mr, (jilloii, Manager of the Press Association, v. the New Zealander Company. a claim for Li»7 for telegrams supplied, was heard. The fact of the money being owing was admitted, but it was pleaded that the plaintitfhad no right to sua, as the defendants were members of the Association. A nonsuit was applied for and granted.
ciii;:;-TC!!i;i:::i[. May 20. The Lyttelton Harbor Board have decided to go 011 with the reclamation of the basin between the present boat jetty and Gladstone Pier. As this will give employment to 80 men for some months, the determination of the Board is very opportune. A man named Amos Green, G1 years of age, was found dead in his bed this morning. He had been in bad health for the past two years. The Sdenhani Borough Council, at its meeting to-night, rcaolvod that the municipality should be represented in a suitable manner at the Sydney Exhibition.
AUCKLAND. May 29. News comes from Taiaroa saw mills that .Saturday and Sunday's rain lias brought down to the mill an additional thousand lot's. They have now received nearly five thousand logs a: Boom's mill during the last two months.
James Barber, of Aratapu, is about to begin building a steamer and engine upon a principle which, when completed, he expects will make a speed of thirty knots an hour upon smooth water. W. Payne, stockman to Messrs. M,Lean and Co. ,'Waikato, has brought from Australia a yearling Hereford bull said to be the finest bull ever brought to New Zea» land. He has sold the whole of the New Zealand stock at high prices. He took them to exhibit at the Sydney Metropolitan Show.
31 r. Shcelian leaves Ohaupo with Bewi tn-morrow. at 9 o'clock, by special train, which is expected to arrive about two, when there will probably be a considerable demonstration on the old warrior's first arrival in Auckland.
Mr. Robert Graham is to be prpsecuted by the Government to-morrow respecting his occupation pf native lands in th§ Rotorua district.
DUNEDIN. May 29. The Harbor Board intend inviting the City Corporation to unite with the Board in laying before the Minister for Works during his visit here next week the objections to the notice, as served on the Board, for the resumption of land for railway purposes. The co-operation of the Corporation of Port Chalmers will also be sought . in pressing upon Mr. Macandrew thenecessityandimportance of lengthening the ggwihg'dock. : ' May SO. , The case of the "Government v. Robert Graham, charged with unlawfully occupy ing Maori land,- conies on to-day. It is exciting great public interest. The "Roman Catholics are greatly dissatisfied at the non-appointment of a bishop to the diocese, and say the High School erected by Father Henneberry cannot be opened." A petition to Rome is suggested. Dr. Moran, Bishop of Dunedin, is administrator of the diocese, and does not like to interfere. Thomas Henderson, jun., has been appointed local manager of the Standard Insurance Company. A liro lii'C'ko out Uiis morning in Simpson's clothing sliup, \ictoria-street. The family slept upstairs, and hearing the crackling noise, Mr. Simpson got up, and saw the shop on fire. The fire brigade, with a splendid head of water, speedily suppressed the flames. The building is owned by llr. T. Hall, Mongonui, and was slightly injured. Mr. Simpson lias two policies on his stock, one for L 250 in the Royal, and another for LIOO in the Colonial. The disruption of the stock was rendered complete, between the fire and water, but the furniture was uninjured. Mr. Simpson is unable to account for the origin of the fire. There was no fireplace in the shop, but a fire had been burning iii the sitting-room behind the shop during the evening, The five originated in the shop, and does not appear to have been in the'sitting-room. TJMARU. " May 39. At a meeting of creditors in the estate of James Strachan, draper, of Timaru, the liabilites were shown at L22,02G, and the assets L 28,259. In the estate of W. Parsons, a farmer, the liabilities amounted to LIO7O, and the assets to LIOOO. NEW PLYMOUTH. May 09. The Hinemoa arrived in the roadstead at about 11 a.m., with the Constabulary.
JNVEKCARGILL. May 29. To-day thp enquiry into the circumstances attending the Makarorawa fire was resumed. Inspector Fox applied for a further remand of eight days, which was granted. Mr. Wade, the counsel for the ° brothers M'Menamin, protested against these continued remands. °At the Waste Lands Board to-day, on the motjon of Mr. Immsden, }t was decided to call the attention of the Chief Surveyor to the advisability of having several runs surveyed, with a view to offering them on the deferred payment system. Between twenty and thirty bags of coal from the Nightcaps mine were brought into town to-day, and distributed amongst several citiy.uiifj, in oi'dur that they may be tested. One large block is to be sent to tho Svdnev Exhibition. May 30.
Mrs. R. S. Bunn, wife of the wellknown Wesleyan minister, died yesterday.
