THE LABOR MARKET. Mr. 11. Mackintosh report# for the week ending May 17th, as follows :—The demand for afi classes of labor has improved very much during the week, farm and station hands being fairly enquired for, and nom- ' hers meeting with engagements, but still a great number are idle. Of female servants there, is still a scarcity. Men cooks are scarce, and day labor pretty well employed. Mechanics of all ctasaes are also plenty of work. Numbers of Taboring men are employed at the grain stores, the port, and the railway, loading a rut anloading. at remunerative wages.; hut there are stilt a great many idle. Unless ptthtic works are commenced soon the winter wit! be a hard one for the working classes. Rates of wages an changed.

The grain market shows no alteration, and is not tifcuty to do so until some definite change tukes place in the I' ngtish and Australian markets, the present tendency of which ra to harden. 'W heat is stitt quoted up to 3s 2d ; oats, ts 9d to 2s Id; and bartey, 4s (id to 5s and us 3d.
