THE LABOR MARKET. Mr. lE. Maekintonh reports for the week ending May 10th. a* follows Business in the labor market has greatly improved this week, servants of all descriptions being very much enquired for. The demand for female servants is atiH as great as ever. Day labor is not so brisk, on account of the stoppage of the public works, which are now almost at a standstill. Rain is very mncft wanted iir this district. Seed is now getting, very scarce, in consequence of the long drought ; the want of rain also causes a lack of enquiry for farming hands, only a few of this class meeting with engagements. Rates of wages—Ploughmen, from 22s ffd to 23s per week ; shepherds. L 65 to L6O; married couptes, L - to> L 80; cooks, frotrt 30s to COsi; housemaids, las to LI ; general servants, 12s, 14s. to t&»; nurses, lis to 7s; hoys, 5s to 10a ; waiters, boots, and grooms, from 20» to 30t* ; day labor, 7s to !>s.
