WELLINGTON. April 25. The first annual report of the Colonial Insurance Company says the Company : was 'registered on the 27th April, 1878, but their principal branches in the Colony were not fairly established until the fol- . lowing months of June and July ; hence the first financial period represents the result of about nine months' business. The income from premiums has been L 32,988 19s 6d ; interest upon investments, 12G5 Gs Id; transfer fees, &c, L 26 4s 9d. The losses for the time have been heavy. Including L 1404 ISs 9d incurred, but not paid, before 31st March, 1879, they amount to L9OSG 6s lid. After deducting re-insurances L 5889 3s, losses L 9036 Gs lid, commission and «eneral expenses L 8282 6s lOd, the amount to credit is L 11,072 13s 7d, from which it has been decided to deduct the whole of the preliminary expenses incurred in the formation of the Company (L 3214 13s 9d) and books and stationery (Lll3B 5s 6d), which still leave?, a balance to the credit of the profit and loss account of L 6719 14s 4d. AVith the view of creating a reserve fund and to add to the confidence insurers have already reposed in the Company, the directors recommend that the balance be carried forward to the profit and loss new account. Mr. J. W. Nathan tendered his resignation as, a director, having to leave the Colony and permanently reside in London. The directors accepted the same, and have appointed Mr. J. S. M. Thompson, of the firm of Messrs. .Thompson, Shannon and Co. in his place. Branches have been established throughout New Zealand and the Australian Colonies, as also in London, Calcutta, and Tasmania. The business of the Company is steadily increasing. Every care has been taken as to the selection of its representatives and to its being con- • ducted on economical and sound insurance ' principles. As intimated when the Company was formed, capital to extent of 10s per share will be required, and ] shareholders have already been called j' upon for 7s. Gd of this, amount. The City Council has agreed to take over the charge of the Wellington Hospital. The Post Office Savings Bank return for the quarter ending March, 1579, reports that the deposits amount to 1259,028 18s Id. against L 193,640 lis Id for the corresponding quarter of 1878, -,vhile the withdrawals were L 255,540 Is Id, against L15G,530 15s 3d for the corresponding period of last year. The excess of deposits over the withdrawals in the quarter was L 842 17s, as against LG4B 15s ICd in the same quarter of last year. To-day, a deputation from the Choral Society waifed cm the Minister for Public Works, to ask a grant of a site on the reclaimed land for a Choral Hall. Mr. Macandrew said that the volunteers also wanted a site for a drill shed, and he recommended the deputation to consult the volunteers, and see if one site would not serve both purposes. April 20. Mr. Gconre Thomas, auctioneer, has called a meeting of his creditors. The- Government will next session introduce a Bill to prevent solicitors from | practising as barristers, unless they pass the latter examination. DUNEDIN. April 25. _ Another of the Timaru Volunteers will have to answer at the City Police Court on the Ist prox. for his disorderly behaviour when returning from the Easter demonstration at Invereargill last week. The charge preferred against Captain Hamersley, who commands the Timaru Artillery "is that of occasioning a riot in the Arcade, the same being an indictable offence.

April 25. ; The Governor telegraphed to-night that ! lie would prefer a ball to a banquet, and his wish will be complied with. INVERCARGILL, April 20. The Governor left by special train this morning at 1Q o'clock, for Dunedin. _He with suite yesterday visited the various public institutions in Invercargill, Riverton in the afternoon, and in the evening was present at the citizens' ball, which was one of the best ever held in the place. His Excellency created an exceedingly favorable impression on all with whom he came into contact.
