The President of the Chamber of Commerce stated to-day that the loss to the district; through the want of trucks; was estimated at L 25,000. The Chamber of Commerce to-day passed a resolution expressing their confidence that Government would be influenced in their, actions on the railway workshops question only by a consideration of the most efficient method of working tho railways. Mr. Learmouth, on behalf of the South British and New Zealand Insurance Companies, calls for tenders for re-building and repairing the machinery in Harworth's sawmills, Gibson's Quay. The total insurance is LISOO, and the agencies expect to reinstate the machinery considerably under the insurance, as it was only partially damaged, GREY-MOUTH. April 23. A public meeting, convened by the Mayor at the request of the unemployed, was" held last night. The hall was crowded to the door. The following resolution was carried: "That the estimate made for piece work on the Greymouth and Hokitika railway does not allow laborers to proeure the necessaries of life, and as the majority of them have families to support, and were promised immediatcemployment, this meeting is of opinion that advantage should not be taken of their position by offering them an unfair rate of wages ; and that the amount appropriated for piece work should be immediately expended in such a manner as to employ laborers at reasonable prices." A second resolution was to a similar effect, and a committee was appointed to wait on the District Engineer, and to point out that Mr. Johnston, the officer in charge, had not acted impartially between the Government and the working men. INYERCARGILL. April 23. At a meeting of citizens this morning, it was decided to adhere to the original project, and to hold the ball on Friday evening, when it is anticipated that the Governor will be present. The Governor is expected here to-morrow evening. April 24 The Governor will arrive here from Queenstown at six this evening. A Volunteer guard of honour will proceed to the Albion Hotel. A concert by the band will be given in the evening, and a levee will be held to-morrow morning. The party will probably adjourn for refreshment to the Club, proceed to Riverton to spend the afternoon, and return to Invcrcargill for the ball in the evening. Preparations are being made to illuminate the town. Somo devices are very fine. The inimi'/ration nominations for the quarter are 130. BLENHEIM. April 23. The Marlborough Agricultural Show was held to-day. The exhibits were not very numerous. Cart horse 3 were plentiful, and the grain was excellent.
