TCews from Oapu Town, dated Bth April, states that Lord Chelmsford reached Gurghstora on the Gth. His troops encountered a large force of the Zulus on the 2nd. A severe engagement ensued, and 1200 Zulus were killed. The British loss was not stated. (SPECIAL TO ri'.K.S-S ASSOCIATION-) Loxuo>~; April 19. It is understood that Sir Julius Yogel retires from the Agent-Guneralaliipfor the purpose of joining a commercial firm. Mr. G. 31. Reid, recently arrived as Irish Immigration Agent, will administer the affairs' of the London Office until a permanent appointment is made by the 2few Zealand Government. April 21. It is rumored that Lord Hardwicke has been appointed Governor of Tasmania. It is stated that JS'ew South Wales intends to raise a loan of three or four millions in London. April 22. The Times has an article supposed not to disclose the intended reply of the Ministry to the Embassy, but of a favorable nature. It says Sir M. HicksBeacli, it is understood, will recommend a nominee Council. 2fews from Afghanistan states that operations are suspended through snow in the Cabul Pass. Another insurrection has broken out in Crete. The Kinc; of Btirmah is defiant. The sculling race for the championship of the Thames took place on Monday, and Keuster beat Spencer. Sir Geo. Bowen's despatch on the constitutional question, in the opinion of Parliament and the country, is considered immature. The Orient line will tender for a direct service. DIPvECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS. It was resolved to wind up and divide the assets, amounting to a quarter of a million, and start a new company. Melbourne, April 23.
Papers per Suez mail advise the following departures from England, between the Ist and 14th of March :—For Otago— Angerona, Victoria, James Nicol Fleming, and Spirit of Dawn. For AucklandIsle of Bute, and Glen Caladt. For Canterbury—Soukar, Otago, and Waimatc. For Wellington—City of Madras. The Kelly sympathisers were liberated yesterday. The scarcity of water in Victoria is neyerely felt.
