WELLINGTON. April 15. H.M.S. Emerald loaves on the 19th for the Auckland Islands, to look for castaways, and to inspect the store depot. Information has been received by the police that the yacht The Brothers is missing, and that there is reason to believe that she has, with her crew of three men, either foundered or been blown out to sea. April 16. The Governor's full commission arrived by the mail, and he will be sworn in under it to-morrow or next day. The Hons. Mr. Macandrew and Colonel Whitmore have returned. The Hinemoa has gone for the Hon. Mr. Sheehan, and the Hon. Mr. Wilson is expected from Napier, so that the whole Executive Council, except the Hon. Mr. Stout, may be here to be re-sworn. The Government have determined to appoint Sir Julius Yogel one of the agents for the consolidation and inscription of New Zealand stock, the state of commercial matters at-Home having prevented earlyaction. For strategical reasons, the WaitaraPatea railway behind Mount Egmont is to be pressed on rapidly. That from Inglewood to Stratford is to be completed by August. The three men missing in the yacht Brothers are safe. The yacht ran on a rock, and. the men had a very narrow escape. One was washed overboard, and struck on the'head by the yacht, but one of his companions swam to his rescue at great risk and saved him.
DUNEDIN. April 15. At the Harbor Board to-day, it was stated that in ordinary weather the Stadt Haarlem could easily have been brought over the bar. The Chairman said the Board was being baulked in its operations by the underhand influence of a certain member of the Government. The annual session of the Otago Educational Institute commenced to-day. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year : —President, Professor Black; Vice-Presidents, Messrs. Grigor (of Balclutha), A. Russell, and A. M'Gregor ; Secretary, Mr. D. White (reelected) ; Treasurer, Mr. James Reid (reelected) : Librarian, Mr. Gardner; Committeemen, Messrs. Fitzgerald, Park, Montgomery, Milne, and Dr. M'Donald. CHEISTCHURCH. April 15. George Fine!!, the porter at the Rangiora railway station, who was injured whilst shunting a truck on April 2nd, died in the Hospital to-day. An inquest will be held. AUCKLAND. April 15. ! The rain continued all last night and I this morning. During the forenoon, there being no apparent abatement, the Racing Club decided to postpone the. second day's races. During the afternoon there was a little improvement in the weather, but present appearances are not favorable for the races to-morrow. The cutter Start, with 25,000 feet of timber on board, has been stranded at Sgunguru sawmills, near Whangaroi. She was insured in the South British for L4OO, but she was worth L7OO. April IG. The weather having cleared up, the second day's races of the Autumn Meeting are now proceeding. A brisk controversy is going on in the press on the genuinnoss of Dr. Slade's Spiritualistic seance, given while he was here.. WANGANUI. April 10. The "Wangauui Steeplechase Meeting is fixed for June 20. The following is the programme :—Handicap, three miles, Ist prize, L 175 ; Maiden Steeplechase, L 75 : Consolation, L3O ; Handicap Trotting Race, L2l. Nominations close on May 23rd. INYEIICARGILL. April IG. The Volunteer demonstration is likely to be a financial success. If there is any loss it will not be a large sum. The town seems very quiet since the Volunteers departed. The last two or three loft by express to-day. A fatal affray has occurred at Oreti. Two men fought in a tent. One is dead. The amount collected for the Kaitangata Fund is L 573. There was a soiree and public meeting in connection with the Good Templar Grand Lodge last night. Dr. Roseby, of Dunedin, delivered an excellent address. TIMAHU. ,\ r vil 15.
