We hare of late received several complaints with reference to the manner in which | men are constantly allowed to congregate in front of one or two hotels in Thames-street. Last evening, jnst before church time, a large number of men gathered in front of one of these r otels, and rendered it difficult for people, especially ladies, to pas 3 along the street, while the language used by some of the number was certainly not the choicest of English. We think this a matter in which the police should interfere, and wc should be pleased to hear the familiar injunction of policemen in large cities " Move on " used occasionally by members of the force in Qamarn.
The only business brought under the notice of his Honor Judge Ward at the District Court this morning was an application by Mr. O'Meagher for an order calling upon the bankrupt and several others to come up for examination with reference to several matters connected with the estate of William Aitkcn. His Honor granted the order, and ttie Court was adjourned ttil 11 o'clo -k tomorrow morning, to enable the summonses to b« served. It is announced in another column that the first general meeting of the shareholders of the Colonial Insurance Comjwny will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, the 25th instant, at the Athemeetm. Wellington. What the business will be may be gleaned from the advertisement.
At the close of both services in St. Paul's Chttrch yesterday, the Rev. A. B. Todd announced that on Thursday next he would eommenee his Bible rcadingclass in tlie High School, between the bonrs of three and four o'clock. He requested those parents and gnardians who were desirous that their children showtd attend the classes to provide them with written intimations to that effect.
The eight o'clock service in the new Teesstreet Hall was again very full last evening, when addresses were delivered on "Grace" sunt "Cain"* worship" to a most attentive aadienee. The choir was smaller than usual, b»t nevertheless led the service of song effectively.
An accident happened yesterday to a son of .15 r. Gordon, boarding-house keeper, Tecs street. The !ad had been watering three horses near the Post Office, ami on returning the horse he was riding took fright and bolted, throwing the boy, who sustained some severe but not dangerous injuries. Mails for .Sydney, etc., per Zealandia, expected at Auckland to-morrow, will close immediately after her arrival. The monthly meeting of the Benevolent Society Committee will be held at seven o'clock this evening.
The Philharmonic Society's nest practice wilt be in the Oddfellows' Hall to-morrow I Tuesday) evening, at .S p.m. All the memhers are requested to attend. The minutes of the last annual meeting having been read and confirmed, the annual balance sheet, showing a credit balance of T>l 43 -Id, was read and adopted. The following officebearers were elected :—President. Mr. A. S. Otteraow : Vice-President, Mr O'Meagher : «'iptattv, Mr Tarawhiti: Deputy-Captain, Mr Waits : Secretary and Treasurer, Mr Cooke. Committee- : Messrs Kerens, Thompson, and Coates. The Committee wa3 empowered to- revise the rule*, and have them printed. A targe number of new members were dented, and the meeting terminated. The monthly meeting of the Waitaki Branch of the Otago Educational Institute was held on Saturday, Mr. M'Lymont in the chair. A telegram from the Secretary to the General Committee wa3 read, intimating that in order that members and teachers might participate in tiic concession of the Government tr> grant return tickets for single fare when attending tiic Conference at Raster it would be necessary for them to present the Conference programme to the ticket clerks. Several members not having been supplied with these programmes the Secretary was directed to procure a supply. Mr. Fuller was re-appointed librarian to the Branch. Some discussion to«k place upon the course of science to he taught to Standards IV., V., and VI., and it was ultimately resolved Branch of the Educational Institute of Otago is? of opinion that the science required for Standards IV. and V. can best be taught by a graduated series of object lessons, and that the science taught to Standard VI. should he tiic one best known to the teacher, and should be taught from a test-book." It was explained in the course of the discussion that the object lessons could be: taken advantage of as subjects for composition ; and that, in the sixth Standard, the.text-book of science, in common with the history* of the text-book, might be considered as a portion of the English tessrtoa of the class. The meeting terminated with the customary vote of thanks to the Chairman.
j The adjourned meeting of the Waiareka 1 Road Board was held on Saturday afternoon, jwhen there were present Messrs. J. C. | Gilchrist (in the chair), Evans, Jackson, ; Lees, T. Reid, Todd, and Oliver (engineer). I In reference to a letter received from Mr. J. i R. Elder, regarding the rates on Mr. Main's land at the Lakes, the Clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to collect the balance, and in the event of any difficulty, to act wnder the advice of the Solicitor. The Secretary to the Treasury intimated that L*t£» Is Id. the amount of the Government subsidy for the half-year ending June, 1579, had been paid in to the credit of the District Fund account. In reply to a letter from the Hon. R. Campbell, with reference to the rates in Whitatonc, it was decided to recommend the writer to arrange the matter with the several purchasers. The ranger (Mr. Dunn) reported recommending that the Board should take action to secure the fines inflicted on owners of stray cattle, and the Clerk was instructed to write to the Go-1
vemment asking for a refund of the amount of such fines. Mr. Black waited on the Board with reference to the fencing of roadlines through Mr. Fenwick'a land. After some discussion, it was resolved to write informing the Municipal Council of the steps taken towards opening this road, and that the plans and »pe<rifications are now prepared for the formation and fencing, and P «v;n£ if it is their wish that tenders be called for the works. The tender of Mr. C. Sims (L 159 lis 8d) for contract 69, erection of culvert and formation on the Airedale road, the voters' and defaulters' lists, and the draft balance-sheet for the year just closed, were laid on the table, and Mr. John Church was re-appointed auditor. Accounts amounting to L 133 1 Is 8d were passed for payment,, and the Board rose.
