CANTERBURY GRAIN RETURNS.

We clip the following from laat week's report of the Canterbury Corn Exchange : The agricultural statistics for the Canterbury Provincial District have been published. As compared with those of 1878, the following is the result: — Wheat. Oats. Acres. Bushels. Acres. Bushels. 1878 ... 147,255 3,400,953 86,815 2,398,943 1879 ... 173,895 3,621,820 128,384 3,237,462 Barley. Potatoes. Acres. Bushels. Acres. Tons. 1878... 13,757 335,753 4419 26,786 1879-. 17,062 371,009 4613 26,768 Taking these returns, it appears the total production in 1879 in wheat, oats, and barley are in excess of those of last year. This year the yield per acre for wheat is stated at 20 "8 bushels; oats, 25-2 bushels.; barley, 21/7 bushels. The return for potatoes shows a slight increase in and over last year. The total _ yield in tons is put down at an increase of 18 tons. Since these particulars were collected the season has been most unfavorable, with such unprecedented and disastrous results that it is impossible to look upon the estimated yields with the usual reliance, as they are largely in excess of the threshing machine returns. In potatoes the yield is stated to be s*B tons to the acre, as against 6'06 last year. From results ascertained, the potato crop cannot be estimated to yield within 40 per cent, of last year.
