period (thirteenth century to present time), lie referred to the fact that the early Britons ha<l to depend on oral teaching. He also referred to the introduction of heathenism by the Anglo-Normans, the power of Romish influence, and the various literary cclebitie3 of the different periods, tosethcr with interesting sketches from their lives down to their closing scenes, the writers referred to being as follows: Venerable Bede T Wvclifie, and his patron John of Gaunt: the Grey-Friars, BlackFriara. and White-Friars (against whom his annunciations were directed); Archbishop Cranmer. &c.; also Tyndale, Coverdale, he. : and after making interesting quotations from the old English versions he alluded to the fact of a copy of the Bible coating L2O, and the earnestness with which the people of that day repaired to the reading of Cranmers great Bible, chained to the altar. He gave a very connected narrative of English History in these times (the time 3 of llenry VII., Edward VI.. Mary and Elisabeth), referring to the Geneva Bible, and bronght a most interesting entertainment to a close by comparing the various versions, giving the palm to the Authorised Version, "and relating an anecdote in connection with the life of one of the tronsla'ora. Dr. Kelly, proving the coTtsdcntioßS care which characterised their deliberation*. He also referred to the English Bible as being the Magna Charta of civil and religious liberty, and the cause of Britain's prospcrfy during the past 300 years. He then concluded by quoting two beantifal stanzas from Pollok and Scott, bearing on the subject. On the motion of | Me. fC Spence, a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation to the lecturer, and the wish expressed that ere long he might favor the district with another. A collection was made in aid of the Waitaki Mission.
