Xatcve, April 1. The conspiracy case against DoniK"i!y and Price. tor endeavoring to defraud Henata K.v.vcjik. a .Maori chief. by agreeing to run tip the prices of the racehorse* Ottlf >ai and Tamwa to liciitious values, was brought to a sudden conclusion today. before halt the witnesses for the defence were examined. Mr. Stuart, the 11.M.. stated that in his opinion a had been made out for the jury, on which Mr. Coniford, the .Solicitor for Donnelly, said lie should not go on any further with the case. Both the defendants were then committed for trial at the next Supreme Court sittings. Mr. I
Rees made application that the trial I should be held in Wellington, in consequence of the Napier sittings not being held till June, and also because, in his opinion, any case between Maoris and Europeans could not get a fair trial in Napier. Mr. Cornford said it was a most extraordinary doctrine for Mr. Rees- to lay down. He strongly opposed the trial being at Wellington, in consequence of a rumor of the expense to his client. The magistrate took Mr. Cornford's view, and refused Mr. Rees' application. A further conspiracy case against Frederick Sutton, M.H.R., Kinross, and George Buckland Worgan, is postponed till Thursday next, the 9th inst.
