MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

Tlie fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Mainland, Headland, Procter, Gibbs, Familton, Humphrey, Spence. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. Permission was granted for the transfer of municipal lease of section 13, block XXIV., from Sir. W. Swanson to Mr. A. Rodgers, provided that all arrears of rent arc paid. An application was received from Mr. William Aitken for permission to transfer the lease of section 10, block 1., to Patrick Gilleran. Some discussion took place upon the matter, the applicant being now a bankrupt. The Town Clerk explained that the lease had actually taken place some months since, though the formal application for the transfer of tlie lease had not been made until now. On the motion of Councillor Humphrey, it was decided that consideration of the matter should stand over until the next ordinary meeting. Permission was granted to Mr. Hugh M'Laren to assign the lease of section 5, block IS, to Mr. Thomas Dunn. Mr. John Hardy, on behalf of Mr. Alex. Kerr, applied for permission to run a stoneware pipe drain 4in. ill diameter into the Lagoon, near the railway bridge, to discharge the overflow from a small cesspool which received the water from the roof of his new store. —On the motion of Councillor Gibbs, the letter was ordered to be referred to the Inspector of Xuisances for report. It was agreed to grant a driver's license to a lad named James Walls. Mr. J. H. Lowe, Resident Engineer for Railways, wrote, asking whether the Council would object to the continuance of the sidings now in progress between the goods shed and Tyne-street across Arun-street, to join the line to the Breakwater.—The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee with power to

deal with it. A telegram was read from Mr. H. J. H. Eliott, Under-Secretary for Lands, explaining that the land proposed to be given to tlie County Council for County buildings was section 9, block 95, is situated behind the Post Office, and fronts . the road to Messrs. J. T. Evans and Co.'s mill, about where the water tanks are. It contains about one-eighth of an acre. The following letter was read Fernhill, 26tli March, 1579. He thought that if the matter went to arbitration Mr. Grant would probably receive something like L2OO. Councillor Gibbs said that he had visited the ground, and thought that Mr. Grant was entitled to some consideration. It was eventually decided to leave the matter to the Chairman of the Waterworks Committee (Councillor Gibbs) and Mr. Connell to arrange. Permission was given to Mr. J. H. Milligan to erect a verandah and make ether alterations to his premises in Thames-street; and to Mr. Hugo Lippert to erect a stone building in Thames-street, on the site of his old store. An application from Mr Kite, for permission to make certain alterations to premises in Wear-street, was referred to the Public Wopks Committee, with power to act. The Public Works Committee reported I that they had given Mr. Kite permission to make certain alterations to his prei mises in Coquet-street, and that they had i declined to grant Mr. Lippert's request for permission to erect a waodeit building • on the site of the store destroyed by fire. ; A report from the.
