THE PUBLIC GARDENS.

At last night's meeting of the Municipal Council, the following report was read from the Corporation Gardener: —"I have the honor to report that the v orks on the Reserves are progressing favourably. As the season is at hand for the autumn planting of trees, I bog to your attention to the annual report of last January. The necessity of a greater variety of shrubs and trees, especially in the public garden in Severn street, is apparent. I think X may state without hesitation that the hitherto exercised in purchasing for public gardens warrants me in soliciting the favor of .a sum being voted for obtaining a varied collection of trees and shrubs this autumn the earlier the better." Some discussion took place upon the matter, during which Councillor Humphrey suggested that LSO should be placed at the disposal of the Gardener for the purchase of trees, shrubs. <fcc. Councillor Headland thought that L3O would be sufficient to vote at present. When a largo sum was voted for any purpose, it was generally thought that the whole amount was to be expended, whether it was necessary or not. Besides, he was not quite clear whether or not the revenue derived from reserves, which had to bo expended on the gardens, covered the whole of the expenditure made upon | them.—After some little further discussion, it was decided to place L3O at the disposal of the Gardener, for the purchase of trees. It was also resolved to have a return prepared, showing the revenue received from recreation reserves, and the amount expended upon the public gardens.
