house, which was next door, at about half-past one o'clock, and tried to discover traces of fire, but failed to do so. The fire was firat discovered at about three o'clock, when the alarm was given, but Gillespie's premises and the sawmill were in flames before the fire brigades arrived on the scene. They could not be saved, as the fire had obtained a firm hold, but it was prevented from spreading. The following are the insurances :—Langdon's mill in the New Zealand, LSOO, half of which had been transferred to the South British ; Gillespie's premises in South British, as follows—Stock L3OO, store and kiln L 2130, another store and shed, Ll2O. A man named William Lennox was brought up at the Court this morning, for fonring three orders for chloroform, but iv;iT remanded for a week, on the ground of uncertainty as to prisoner's sanity.
