HAMPDEN.

[FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] We have had splendid harvest weather, and threshing is in full swing. Farmers seem well satisfied with the yield. As much as 70 bushels have been threshed from some of the paddocks in Hampden. I am sorry to have to chronicle a severe accident to an old resident, Mr. J. Evans. On Thursday he was chopping some wood, when the axe slipped, and cleanly severed two of his toes and injured the others. He was taken by train to Oamaru for medical advice. Our worthy townsman Mr. J. It. Bremner had a narrow escape on Friday. He was driving some cattle at Moeraki, and while trying to head some of them, he was nearly thrown down a precipice. Fortunately he escaped, but the horse was killed on the spot. On visiting the workshops of Mr. John Douglas, of Market-square, I was surprised to find that our energetic townsman has started the manufacture of agricultural implements on a somewhat large scale. Different machines have been fitted up, and he is now turning out double-furrow ploughs, harrows, and other implements, which would be hard to beat in point of workmanship by much older firms. I sincerely trust that he will meet with that support that his energy and pluck entitle him to. The petition in favor of constituting the township of Hampden a borough has met with great success, and will be open for inspection next w r eek, as advertised in your paper.
