NORTH OTAGO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW.
The autumn exhibition of the North Otago Horticultural Society was held to-day, and was by far the most successful show that has been held in Oamaru for some time past. The display of flowers, fruit, and vegetables was unsurpassable in quality, while there was an abundance of every kind of exhibit. It would be impossible to give a detailed notice of the many beautiful and wholesome things displayed, and we are therefore forced to select a few of the exhibits only for special mention. Taking the collections in the order in which they came under our notice during the work of staging, we may mention that Mr. J. Ireland showed a large collection of pot plants, amongst the number jbeing a hydrangea variegata in full bloom (a rarity in this part of the world), beautiful ivy-leaved geranium, and other variegated leaved geraniums. Dr. Dp Lautour had a small but excellent collection of plants, the most noticeable being a castor oil plant. He also showed a fine specimen of the Hercules club gourd, another rarity in Oamaru. As usual, Mr. Connell had a magnificent display of pot plants, and aided very materially in giving variety and abundance to the beautiful flowers on exhibition.' Amongst the collection was a nerium oleander of a rare kind here. Some liliums of a choice kind, including two new varieties known as Lilium Auratum, or the golden rayed lily of Japan, and the lilium tigrinum flora plena. Mr. Sumpter showed a very nice collection of stove plants, and an American variety of the sunflower of gigantic proportions. Mr. Spratt had some very nice cut flowers, dahlias, verbenas, asters, and marigolds. One of the best collections in the room was that of Mr. Forsyth, gardener to the Hon. M. Holmes, including some cockscombs in full bloom, a large variety of fuchsias, besides many other plants of an excellent quality. Mr. J. Falconer had, for exhibition only, a very large and excellent collection of pot plants, including an almost endless variety of plants, many of which were of rare quality. Some very handsome bouquets, made up by children, were shown. The display of fruit was excellent, foremost amongst them being a collection by Mr. Draper, vhu had no less than 75 varieties o:; exhibition, including some luscious grapes of South Australian growth, the whole forming one of the finest collections we have ever seen in the Colony. Mr. Earle had also a fine collection of fruit, but it was not displayed to great advantage. Mr. Leith, gardener to Mr. E. Menlove, showed some fine fruit and vegetables, and Mr. Gordon showed a fine lot of apples. Some splendid grapes were shown by Mr. Sealey, gardener to the Hon. R Campbell. The display of vegetables was the finest we have ever seen at a show in Oamaru, being large in quantity and excellent in quality. The judges were Messrs. Maroney (Balruddery), M'Pherson (Elderslie), Lewis (Timaru), Knowles (Timaru), Lemon (Oamaru), The following is the prize list : I'OT PLANTS —GARDENERS. 3 Stove Plants—H.
