The distress in the Old Country is keener now than it has been for the last 30 years. Ten thousand workpeople have been deprived of the means of support through the closing of gigantic manufactories. Not only have operatives been, thrown out of employment property lias Wome sadly and rapidly depreciated in value. Allthii is more or less the outcome of foreign conj, petition. This is the evil that every countr' should guard against. Let the people e New Zealand take warning. Let then study their own interests and avert such crises by encouraging local industries. We can make our own woollen goods, iron, boots and shoes, &c. For the hrst purpi factories are already in existence ; as regard! the second, numerous vigorous attempt) have been made to transform the Taranaki iron sand into a marketable commodity; although a method of properly doing this may not be discovered for many years, that iron will before long be manufactured in the Colony we have no doubt. To us, as a dig. trict, the third industry is of more direct interest. We have no longer any necessity to send out of the district for boots and shoes. Messrs. Rouoiiton and Pocklisgtox manufacture them here as well andai cheaply as they can be done in any part ot the world. Protect your own interests by seeing that you buy boots and shoes made by Roitchtox and Pocklington of the New Zealand Boot "Factory, Thames-strect,-[Advt.
