[FSOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] >'. x , ; WELLrnGTON". K y:-.. V.'..>\ \/'February 22. J/ v The Pp'stjsays that during their tour in South the Colonial Secretary and t other Ministers visited the ' Industrial "Schools .established and ' ThVjK were 1 ;" much pleased : with the result of their inspection. -At ! present the boys are all apprenticed to . farmers, but, from some of the results of i their visit Ministers have determined to establish workshops in connection with the schools, in which boys may learn the rudiments of various trades. A complete ' printing plant will be ordered, and such ■ of the boys as show an aptitude for this trade will be put to it. One reason for this is that printers' trade Societies in some of the large towns do not allow masters to take apprentices. It is felt that such a restriction must be eminently injurious to the trade, the supply of the rising generation of printers being almost entirely dependent upon country offices and immigration. Besides printing, carpentering, bootmaking, and other trades will probably be taught. The girls in these schools might also with advantage be taught housework, cooking, &c, and be educated for dressmakers. Doubtless some steps in this direction will follow that already decided upon. CHRISTCHURCH. February 24. The Lyttelton Regatta Committee has presented Captain Babot,of the Hydaspes, with a piece of plate in recognition of his services in connection with the late regatta.
