The inquiry into the late collision between the steamers Hina and Go-ahead has terminated. The judgment, blames both captains equally, warns them to be more careful in future, and adjudges them to pay costs equally. Their certificates are returned.
The Typographical Society recently demanded an increase of 6s per week on day, and Id per 1000 on night, papers, with a corresponding increase for overtime. The masters have remonstrated, and several conferences have taken place, but the Societj- insists upon an increase from next Saturday. The whole of the masters, including the Government printer, have agreed not to grant the demand, and a general strike is therefore probable. At a Rechabite annual.district meeting yesterday the election of officers for the ensuiii" year was proceeded with, and resulted as follows :—D.C.R., Bro. W. Hislop ; D.D.R., Bro. F. Inglis, from Victoria, visited the Council and conveyed to the Assembly of Delega.es the good wishes of the brotherhood in Victoria. At a meeting in Christchurch, Frankland, the Government Actuary, attended, and gave information regarding the Government contributions, tables for Friendly Societies, and on the question of admitting female members. He said that any tent having admitted ten, or more than ten, female members should be requested to form them at onco into a separate branch ; and that any tent having a lesser number than ten should be requested to obtain that number as soon as possible, with a view to the formation of a separate branch. It was further resolved that the district take no steps in making laws for a mixed tent until such time as the proposed Southern Board of Directors be formed, or until such time as provision be made for mixed tents by a Board of Directors in England. Robot-is, a clerk in the Bank of New Zealand, formerly of the Taurauga branch, has disappeared, it is supposed by mad sleatner. Myas has at last been got rid of. He will i-d urn by the Sapphire to England, and will be court-marliallcd for desertion and breach of arrest. A cowardly assault was committed by iivii seamen of the Sapphire on A. B. Donald and W. Prichard, who interfered with their horse play to a little lad who had made some remark respecting them in Upper A'incent-street. Donald, was severely cut about the face. The Rev. Mr. Diitlon, Primitive Methodist minister, was passing, and appealed to the sailors, but they turned, took his stick, and .struck him on the face severely. The police subsequently faced the offenders (Flay and Hnxable), who were arrested. The associaied insurance tariff has burst up. The New Zealand Company now announces that it will take risks at from | -uiu shilling and sixpence per cent, upwards. GRAHAMSTOWN. February 18. Fearful bush fires have been raging here for the last three days, and a large amount of property has narrowly escaped. Several houses have been burned, and others are still in danger. NEW PLYMOUTH. February 18. I A tragic occurrence has been reported i to the police as occurring at Normanby. Two Germans (step-brothers), named Ferdinand Paul and Carl Grungall, living at Normanby, had a quarrel on Sunday, 'JOtii January. Paul, who is said to have been under the influence of drink, passed from words to blows, and finally drawing
a knife on Grungall, who seized a post, struck Paul a severe blow on the head, inflicting such injuries that Paul died yesterday. An -inquest will be held tomorrow. Inspector Bullen will conduct the enquiry. - BLENHEIM. February 18. A fire occurred at Clova Bay, Pelorous Sound, on Sunday morning. Beauchamp and Goefrey's sawmills were totally destroyed. The origin of the fire is unknown. The loss is estimated at L 15,000. The mills were insured in the National for LSOO and Victoria for LSOO.
