that the prosecutor was at work on board ! the steamer Kiwi, and had a house in (Wellington in which hia wife and children ! resided. On prosecutor's return he found that his wife had left her home, and was told she had gone with prisoner. Some furniture and a cash-box, containing money, were also missing. Prisoner was apprehended on board the Albion at the Bluff, having taken passage to Melbourne. Prosecutor's wife was on board the same steamer. Prisoner had L6O in hi* possession, together with a pair of earrings, which prosecutor identified as his property, and which prisoner said had been given to him hy Mrs. Dentice. The defence was that the prisoner was en route for Europe, and it was an unfortunate coincidence that prosecutors' wife happened to be on the same steamer. She gave him the carring3 to take care of, as she was very sick. Mr. Mansford said it was a very suspicious case, but there was not sufficient evidence for a jury to convict upon. He then ordered prisoner to be discharged. The police and the public arc alike to be congratulated on the timely .check placed upon the operations of William Brown, «Has Furnace, who was brought up on various charges at the Resident 3lagistrate's Court this morning, and received sentences amounting in the aggregate to 18 months' imprisonment. From the circumstances which transpired in the Court, and from information received by the police, there is very little doubt that prisoner is a criminal of the imnst dangerous class. He is stated by ! the police" to be one of a notorious gang 'with which Sydney is infested, known by jthc name of "The Forty Thieves,' i several members of which arc at present :" doing" various terms of penal servitude. [The prisoner, on being apprehended, i stated that he was a seamen from 2»ow- ! castle, recently discharged from the Kohin ! Hood. The state of his hands, which I were soft and white, at once gave the lie ! to this statement, and subsequent investigations l»y the police revealed the I mans true character. In a bag under the ! prisoners bed were found a set of. care-fully-made skeleton keys, such as would open any ordinary front door, a screwdriver, and other articles such as are usually carried by burglars. From inquiries which they have made, the police have reason to believe that prisoner was acting in concert with a gang, and that the tatter had '"spotted'' several houses in the city and suburbs as likely " cribs" to be •' cracked ;" that they had made arrangements for taking a house for the reception of stolen property, and had also provided for the breaking up of fancy plate which thev mitfht succeed in stealing ; in fact, it would appear that they were only waiting for the races to he over to commence operations in earnest. The prisoner, who is a smooth-faced, close-cropped, bulletheaded man of about three and twenty, possessing the typical physiognomy of a professional thief, appeared to be no stranger to the interior of a police court. He iTosx-examined the witnesses, and iarfdussed the court with a great deal of etfrontervand a certain amount of cunning. The web was too closely woven round him, however, and Furnace will now have abundant leisure to reflect on the vanity of human wishes or any other subject upon which he may be pleased to bring his powerful intellect to bear. The Post this evening expresses approval of the determination of the Government to hang Walsh.
