WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Gounty Council was "held at the County Chambers to-day. There were present— The Hon. R - Campbell (Chairman), Messrs. Todd, Thomson, Murcott, Johnstone, D. Sutherland, W. Sutherand, and Duncan. Mr. Oliver (Engineer) was also present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. The Chairman said he had spoken to Mr. Conyers with reference to the proposed siding at "Whitstone. That gentleman had promised to get the work done, but owing to the late accident to Mr. Conyers some time must elapse before it could be carried out. A letter from Mr. Woonton, of Maerewhenua, with reference to a road to his property, having been read, the Clerk said that the matter was being attended to. Letters were read from the secretaries of several public libraries, thanking the Council for their votes in aid of libraries, and pointing out the manner in which they wished the money to be paid. It was understood that the recpaest would be complied with. The application of Mr. Mathew Henderson for a slaughtering license for section 2 block 11., Moeraki, was granted. A letter was read from Mr. N. W. Werry, Railway Department, stating that, in accordance with a promise made by the Government to the House of Representatives during last session of Parliament, the issue of free passes had ceased on the 31st December last. The Chairman said it was now for the Council to decide what remuneration members should receive for the loss of time they sustained and the expense they would be put to in attending the meetings. Mr. Murcott said that, as Mr. Falconer was not present to move his motion, he would propose a motion which he thought would be acceptable. He then moved that members should receive one guinea for each meeting they attend and a travelling allowance of Gd a mile for one way. Mi*. D. Sutherland seconded the motion. After some little discussion, the motion was carried. A letter from Mr. J. H. Lowe, Resident Engineer for Constructed Railways, was read, intimating that instructions had been given for the erection of a fence near the Teaneraki Railway Station, for the protection of travellers. Mr. Todd said the work had been completed. The valuation list for the outlying districts were laid upon the table. Tenders for forming and gravelling 80 chains of road, from Ngapara to the Tables, were opened, and the lowest—that of Messrs. Cassey and Keiffe for L2lC—was accepted. The Engineer's report, dealing with several matters, was read, the principal subject touched upon being the opening of the road through Messrs. Borton and M'Master's estate to join the Maerewhenua road. Tenders were ordered to be called for the wcrk. A petition was read from residents of Duntroon, complaining of the damage done to their property by surface water, ! owing to the present formation of the h roads in that township. The Engineer was'instruefced to report on the subject at next meeting. The Road Inspector's report was read and approved. Mr. Murcott gave notice to move at next meeting—" That the sum of L2O be granted to the Benevolent Society." He also drew attention to the necessity for erecting a Council Chamber. The Chairman said that it would be necessary to obtain the support of the Government in getting an Act through the Assembly for that purpose. A deputation, consisting of Mr. D. Sutherland and Mr. W. Suthorlaua "_«■» appointed to wait upon the Hon. Mr. Macanclrew in regard to the matter. Accounts amounting to L24G5 13s 3d were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned. __^_____
