[ February S. ; The ship Endymion is outside the Heads, 00 days from London. | In the sailing match for the championship of the Colon}-, the Transit came in at : 8.20 and the Torea at 12.4. In rounding ■ the "Watchman, oft' Cape Colville, the Transit was nine minutes ahead, but the breeze freshened, and the Transit increased the distance as it died away, and the Torea lessened it to within four minutes. Practically the Transit beat the Torea by five miles, as, being that distaneo to windward she caught the end- of the flood tide and came up the harbor. The Torea was too late to round the North Head, and got jammed with the ' ebb tide in Rangitoto Channel, and remained in doldrums till far on in the forenoon, j WELLINGTON. February 7. L 1000." i _. . \A young 'man>.who for a long tiine'has been collecting alms under: the pretence of being deaf and dumb was arrested last night for sleeping in Cobb's stables. He was found possessed of a Post Office Savings Bank book, showing that he had under an assumed name banked from 10s to 14s a day for some months past as the result of his begging. Several witnesses said they had heard him speak. He is remanded. A telegram from the Agent-General, dated 4th February, announces the departure of the Westland for Port Chalmers with 167 immigrants. DUNEDEST. February 7. The Customs authorities are making inquiries into the circumstances of the drowning of the lad William Taylor from the barque Eastorhill, concerning whom some passengers made statements which implied gross criminality on the part of the captain. The charge against James Green, Chairman, &c., of electing himself Chairman by his casting vote, and thus voting on a question in which he had a pecuniary interest, was heard at Palmerston to-day and dismissed. James Burgess and William Hanbery, for placing trolly-wheels on the railway near Palmerston, were committed for trial to-day. CHRISTCHURCH. February 7. The Canterbury Eleven are—Messrs. Ashby, Beard, Corfe, the Fowlers, W. Frith, Moore, Neilson, Ollivier, Secretan, and G. A. Turner. All exept Beard and Turner have played against Otago before ; but it will be observed that several well known names are absent from the list—notably, C. Frith, Fuller, the Leaches, Baker, Lee, Stevens, and Hartland. The team is very strong in batting, every one being likely to make runs, and it is fair in bowling. Beard is a likely trundler, having a stj-le quite different from any of the old bowlers ; and Turner, the other man, often gets wickets. | NEW PLYMOUTH. February 7. The Herald says the Government will immediately make roads to open up the Wahnea Piains. WESTPORT. February 7. The Commissioners have received the Governor's permission to inform Warden Board that the charges of intemperance have not been proved, and that no imputation rests on his character. He has applied to be removed from Westport. INVERCARGILL. February 7. Considerable disgust and inconvenience is experienced at the action of the various banks in calling in advances. This has been done in a number of cases in which the assets were undoubted.
