AUCKLAND. February 7. At a meeting of the Waste Lands Board, the Chairman stated that it would be about three months before the Te Aroha landa would be open for settlement. Arrived—Margaret Galbraith, from London. She sailed on November 28, and spoke the ship Western Monarch, from London for Otago, with emigrants, on December 28, and Northern Monarch, from London for Canterbury, with emigrants. The yacht Volante, containing .Allison and Nicholson, capsized off Oraki Bay. The accident was seen by a Maori at the Oraki settlement and by a waterman named Hunt Williams, of Holbrook. Both parties were distant a mile and a half from the scene of the accident. After a splendid struggle, both boats reached the men together and saved them. Myers, the alleged deserter fromH.M.s. Blanche, was remanded to-day for the tenth time, notwithstanding that counsel was employed by subscription fund for the defence. There is great excitement over the sailing match for Ll5O a-side between the Transit and the Torea. The course was round the Watchman, off Cape Colville—--100 miles. A splendid start took place to a medium breeze. Rounding the North Head the Transit was slightly leading. WESTPORT. February 6. Messrs. Roberts and G. S. Cooper, Commissioners, have concluded the inquiry into charges against Warden Broad, preferred by the sergeant of police. The charges completely broke down. Much sympathy is felt for Warden Broad. NELSON. February 6. There was considerable excitement at the election to-day. The result of the poll was—Adams, 360 ; Pitt, 252. TIMARU. February 6. The body John King, a shearer, was found in the Rangitata river yesterday. He had been missing since February 1. He was the worse for drink when last seen. The temperate weather during the past week has greatly checked sickness in Timaru and district, but deaths are still above the average. NAPIER. February G. Great dissatisfaction exists herefrom the want of information re the New Zealand Rille Association meeting at Nelson. No prize list has been published. The Hawkes Bay Rifle Association prize firing was completed yesterday morning. Mr.'N. Mackintosh, of the Napier Volunteer Engineers, was the highest aggregate scorer, making 157 points out of 51 shots. He becomes the winner of a valuable clock and several money prizes. INYERCARGILL. February 7. The demonstration on the occasion of the railway opening, after payment of all expenses, leaves a considerable money surplus in the hands of the Treasurer. The Tararua is so crowded that some of the passengers are unprovided with berths. She leaves at one o'clock. Mr. Conyers has so far improved as to be able to sit up. GREAT FIRE IN GHRISTCHURGIL CunisTfHt'Rcii, February 6. A most destructive fire broke out in Litchfield street, shortly before (3 o'clock this evening, in the premises occupied by Mr. W. Saunders, general merchant; Sargood, Son, and Ewcn, warehousemen ; and H. Sorenson, merchant. There was a strong smith-west breeze, which together with the inflammable nature of the stock, prevented scarcely anything being saved. Mr. Sorenson's stock was valued at about LSOOO : Mr. Saunders' at L 12,000, and the building, which was owned by him, at L4OOO. Messrs. Sargood's loss is unknown, owing to the manager's absence in Dunedin. Saunders' insurances are :—Stock —New Zealand, L 400 0; South British, L2~joo : Standard, LIOOO ; London and Lancashire, L 1000; total, LBSOO. On building—New Zealand. LIOOO ; South British, L 500; Colonial, LIOOO ; total, L 2500. Sorenson-—on stock, L3OOO in Standard. Sargood—on stock, L2OOO in National. Messrs. King and Co., produce merchants, had a large quantity of butter in the store, which was covered by an insurance of LIOOO, but it is not known in what office. With the exception of LSOO on Saunders' stock, and LIOOO on Sorenson's, the Standard is covered by reinsurance.
