NORTH OTAGO BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

The usual monthly meeting of the Committee of this Society was held last evening, when there were present —Messrs. Falconer'(President), Collis, N". Fleming, Gibbs, Greenfield, Hassell, Kerr, Milligan, Mollison, Otterson, Ronayne and Steward. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the following report from the Barrackmaster was read : Oamaru, February 3, 1579. The Committee North Otago Benevolent Society. Gentlemen, —I have the honor to forward the following report for the month of January, 1579 : There are fonr children remaining in the Institution. Nine domestic servants have been admitted into the Institution during the month. All, with the exception of two, have obtained situations. Two hundred and eight Government immigrants have been received into the Depot, all of whom have obtained employment. I herewith forward abstract ration return for the month. I have, &c, Alfred Hesketh. The District Land Registrar wrote, intimating that the Crown grants for the sections granted to the Society were ready for issue, on payment of the fees—L9 10s. Mr. Milligan reported that the lowest tender for the erection of Mrs. Black's cottage had been accepted, the amount being L 72. On the motion of Mr. Steward, it was resolved—" That the Secretary write to the manager of the Benevolent Institute, Dunedin, asking that Institute to receive Mrs. Morrison as an inmate, this Society to pay for her maintenance , and failing the Institute acceding to the proposal, that an emergency meeting be forthwith called to take the case into further consideration. The Visiting Committee to be requested to see that the woman is cared for in the meantime." The report of the Visiting Committee was read, and adopted after some amendments had been made. The Secretary was instructed to prepare a Relief Directory. Accounts to the amount of L 79 IGs, as certified by the Visiting Committee, were passed for payment, The salary of the Secretary was raised to L4O per annum, and some matters of a routine nature having been dealt with, the meeting terminated.
