"The Otogo portion of the inward San Francisco mail was brought from Christchurch by special train yeaterdav, arriving in Dunedin at atwut 8 p.m." Weare glad of this. Ktu'utg tiivtitjvi'k,... .'■•-■:•- •'• ut to >;vinplain abont the detvya that occurred in the transmission of our share of the English raaife before Mr. Bickxeix was honored with tho dignified title of "Chief Postmaster," ' and we cherished the notion when that happy event arose that there would be an end to all postal troubles. But the old game is being perpetuated under the new rt'/nnf. What profundity of_ judgment —what clever management Ts displayed—in sending the Dimedin portion of "the San Francisco mail by " special" train to that city yesterday, and leaving Oatnaru out in the cold. The precious •'special" that screeched as though it was f'totnu' a great stroke «>f business —in fact, it 3'xuted to be crawling about the lined t» the vicinity of Oamaru during the whole of yesterday afternoon, as though it had "got something to leave bi-hind —may have carried our portion of the mail on to Duncdin, in which case, we presume, it will l>e in the private boxes to-night and delivered in the town jtomorrow; or it may have left it behind. Either the one or the other would be unpardonable. It would have been quite ea.y to have shipped our portion, and dro'pped it *••»* /•>»!?'-;; and we will vouch for this, that the Oamaru Chamber .f Commerce will not allow the matter to pas* without expressing its opinion upon it. Whether intentionally or not. the Postal and Telegraph Departments are working in concert with each other in such :\ manner aa to preserve the commercial .supremacy of certain portions of the Cotonv. A day lost <»r gained to a commercial man is "sometimes of the greatest consequence ; and, although we would not advocate the running of "specials" on Sundays, even to carry the English mail, yet we think that if "it is done for Dunedrn it should be done for Oamaru and : all places »"» ronh. Snnee writing the above, the Oamaru portion of the'mail has arrived by the afternoon's express, and the cool in- ; dttfert'ttee displayed by tin's proceeding to the etamts of Oamaru" has created much dis ;ust and annoyance in this community. it appears so "in tut tons to detain Oamaru s porthn for the ordinary train, when it :.d-hl: have been sent" with that for l>uru:di:i by yesterday's special.
