CRICKET.
o OAMAJRU CLUB V. EXCELSIOR CLUB.
On Saturday afternoon a match was commenced between eleven of the Oamaru Club and fifteen of the Excelsior Club. Lowe, who captained the eleven, having won the toss, elected to take the field, and G. Fenwick sent in Snow and Finch to open the battle against the bowling of Lowe, and J. Millington. To the utter astonishment of those who had predicted that the juniors would make but a poor show when opposed by the bowlers of the older Club, a long and determined stand was made, both batsmen playing carefully and well. Thirty runs had been placed to their credit before a separation was effected, Finch retiring for a well-earned 16. Leather-hunting was the order of the day for the eleven, and they plenty of it, for though no less than seven bowlers were tried, the. fifteen still maintained the wickets when time was called and the wickets drawn for the day, the total being 121 for eleven wickets. Snow, who has a very peculiar but not pleasing style, played exceedingly well, and was not disposed of until he had obtained 53, made with scarcely a mistake. Howarth also played well for his 10. The bowling of Lowe, who trundled throughout the afternoon, was very good, most of the runs being obtained from the other bowlers.
