FATHER HENNEBERRY.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING iJATL. ' Sir,—ln many cases demonstrations are obnoxious, they promote sectarianism, they obtrude social differences ; but it is a pity to pass without comment one good in intent and good in execution. I mean the Good Templar demonstration which was held a week ago at Waimate. There were, not counting the mere spectators, over 700 Good Templars present, all marshalled in good order, numbers coming from Timaru and the surrounding places. Prejudice appears to dictate to many the feeling that Irishmen, when in bodies, are not of a very orderly character. This will give the feeling the lie. The manly, temperate manner in which all present manifested their interest in the cause of temperance not only proves the living spirit of Father Henneberry's work, but
has proved a means of inducing rn&J| join a society which can set so splenjM example. A procession was the head of which was our priest, an(H concourse was brought up in the another clergyman in the" had by him a staff on horseback reijfl go to each part of the rank to pass orflj When the signal for halt was givJH perfect circle was formed, and wtJI were seated a splendid repast was JB all round by assistants in less thj9| minutes. Sports were then engagtjl and the whole celebration went to jl what active energy can do in orgawß so large a body of people. H I have learnt from an official Father Henneberry's discourses I been of more avail in his district • lialf-a-dozen policemen in promoting 0( It is good to see a church take up matter so. Things temporal thus hanj help things spiritual, and the en shown in actively organising this the Catholic clergy at Waimate is an' ample that could with profitableiiesi followed by clergymen of other denote tions. Nothing would so aid thos[ and intellectual wolfare of the peopj large as such active movements, andj tend to the education of those who entrusted to the hands of the schoolnu and pastor.—Yours, &c., J Waimate, January 9, 1878. . :—=
