«, (FROM OCTK OW.V CORRESPONDENT.) AUCKLAND. January 11. The Star says that journalists are coming to the front in this age. The present Premier of England, and the late Premier, were leader writers in influential London journals ; and many other great men, notably celebrated lawyers and judges, have begun their careers at the reporter's desk. Sir Julius Vogel, who initiated the Public Works Policy, won his .spurs after long and arduous labors in the field of journalism. Mr. G. M. Reed, who weilded the pen of a ready writer lately, is to do excellent service for ]STew Zealand as an immigration agent ; and telegrams received to-day announce that Mr. D. M. Luckie, formerly editor of the daily Southern Cross, and more recently of the Post has been appointed Commissioner of Annuities at a salary of LBOO a year. Sir George Grey, as a scholar, has naturally a warm sympathy with journalists who have made their mark. Mr. Harris, of Wangapoua, has the 01113in ill at work on the East Coast, and that of Aratipu is the only one on the West Coast. Timber is very scarce, and rain is wanted to bring down logs.
