The Evening Mail WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE NEW ZEALAND AGRICULTURIST. MONDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1878.

Bishop Moran and the Rev. Fathers O'Malley and M'Enroe left by this evenings train for Dunediu. _ . Mails for Sydney per Zealandia, which is expected to-morrow, 17th, will close immediately after her arrival at Auckland. » The usual fortnightly meeting of the Commercial Building Society will be held this evening. , _ , A special meeting of the Mechanics Institute Committee will be held this evening at 8 o'clock, for the transaction of important business. . Those members of the National Rifle Association who intend being present at the competition to be held at Nelson in February, must send in their names to the local Secretaye (Mr. E. A. Atkinson) before eight o'clock on Thursday evening. We understand that the election of the School Committee for the ensuing year is fixed to be held at the High School on January 27, IS7O. The adjourned meeting of the Oamaru Branch of the Otago Educational Institute was held on Saturday, when consideration *.of the regulations lately issued by the Education Department was resumed. After considerable discussion, the following resolutions were agreed to :—" That this.branch of the institute is of opinion that, the term of service and the programme "of annual examination of pupil teachers should be uniform for New Zealand, and not left to the, decision of the several District Boards. . " That it is desirable to have a uniform set of books for the various subjects, science included, taught in each standard, and that the Institute be requested to move the Education Board of Otago to adopt sets for its district." Further consideration of the regulations was peferred, and it was decided that the next meeting should be held on the first Saturday in February. The speakers last night at the evangelistic service held in the Tees-street Hall were ■'the llev. J. Mirams and the Rev. H. Dewsbury. The Hall was quite full as usual, and the attention of the audience sustained throughout. The choir rendered good service. The singing was bright and cheerful, and was well joined in by those present. We understand that these S o'clock services were inaugurated for the purpose of meeting what was conceived to be a want during the summer'mouths, and will therefore probably he discontinued after a few more weeks. Mr. G., Wright, an American gentleman, is now on a visit to this district. His object is to obtain support for an American and Australian Directory. For a small charge, advertisements are inserted in this work, and advertisers arc presented with a most useful map. On one side.iis what is called an "Illustrated Centennial' Map of the World," containing a.' vari'ety of useful information round the*- margin. On the reverse side is a map of the United States ot America, with every information in connection with that interesting part of the world calculated to be of service to colonists. Mr. Wright has now almost finished a tour thron jh the whole of the Colonies, and the bulkiness of his portfolio is conclusive evidence that he has been successful in his mission by obtaining a large number of advertisements and subscribers to his book. The Directory will shortly bo published, and sold throughout the world ; and as it is to contain a vast amount of information in connection with the Ignited States and the Australian Colonics, it is probable that it will be largely circulated. It, therefore, offers advantages to those desiring to become known beyond the limits of their own district and Colony.
