TO TRAVEL m THIS flfi SEASON IN THE PAPAKAIO, WAIAREKA, AND KAKANUI DISTRICTS, If sufficient inducement offers, The fashionably - bred and Very superior Thorough-bred Horse PERT •• O B E, Eminently suited for getting Hunters, Handsome Weight-carrying Hacks, aad Horses suitable for the Indian Market. PERTOBE is a beautiful dapple browa Stallion, standing 16 hands high, Bred by H. Phillips, Esq., Victoria, ia 1569. -Got by Panic (imported); his dam, Hester Grazebrook, by The Premier (imported), out of Miss Napier, by Delapr< (im. ported); Miss Napier's dam, Mrs. Roberts, by Wanderer (imported). See Victoria* Stud Booh, Vol. 11., p. 47. Panic was imported from England to Tasmania, and p«t to the stud at 3 yrs. old. He was trained ar-.d raced at 4, and again put to the stud. When he was 6 yrs. old; he was purchased at a high price and imported to Victoria, where he had two more seasons' training and racing. He proved himself the best English horse ever trained 7in Australia. He ran remarkably well, and won several races, carrying heavy weights ; he: was both speedy and staying, of a most doeale and quiet temper, with a wonderful constitutipn, and legs like iron. Like his sire, that firstclass English racehorse Alarm, "ha was never sick, sorry, or lame," and retired from the turf without a blemish. At the stud, although from being in an out-of-the-way place, he has not been favored by many first-class mares, he has got more winners out of half-bred ones than any horse in Vio. toria, and for general purposes his stock ia much esteemed. iln the breeding of PERTOBE thero ia * combination of some excellent strains of blood, such as the Waxy-Whalebon*, ia that famous line through Defen«e, ani which comes-to him on the sides of b»ti sire and dam. -- On his sire Panic's aid* there is, as well as his good Defence blood, that of the game aacl stout Venjton, the powerful and speedy Melbourne, aadj most excellent of all, that of Pantaloon. " The value of the Pantaloon blood is undeniable, having furnished so many proofs, not tdon as to its being speedy and staying, but alt* to its 'training on,' and being essentially a ' running strain for although some others occasionally produce one or two first-claia animals, few, if any, can compete witfe Pantaloon as to numbers. A very grand recommendation of this strain of blood is, that it mixes successfully with, and improves, all others." Thus writes Copperthwaite, and. other good turf authorities agree with to the same effect. On the the dam of Pertoee there is xot »f good blood coming in through lie Premier, whose grandsire, Tomboy, was by Jerry, out of the Ardrossan maro (the dam of the mare Beeswing, celebrated not only as a first-class racer, but also as the maternal ancestress of Englamd'i very best family of racehorses at the preseat time, viz., the Newminsters). The Delapri blood is also very good indeed. dam, Fortress, by Defence, was the dam of the Derby winner, Pyrrhus the First. Mrs. Roberta, the great grand-dam of Pertobe, was by Wanderer, and Wanderer's blood is good, he being by Wanderer, by Gohanna, by Mercury, by Eclipse. In' Tasmania, so much is the Wanderer blood thought of, that they say " a bad one by Wanderer was never known," and if they can trace a pedigree to a Wanderer mare, they consider that quite sufficient. As a sire of good, sound/ sUMI useful stock he has never had an eqfeal ia the Southern His victory" i* the Launceston Champion Race, and tk* style in which he carried lOst. into second place in the Melbourne Cup, were performances of merit, and sufficient to satisfy tfc* most exacting that he was a racehorse of *0 mean order. The soundness of hia stock kaa become a proverb on the Australian Turf, and the ancient Strop who won a race at Launceston in February, i 3 a living exampl*. Few horses have gone through such an oraeal as Melbourne, another son at present performing at Queensland. The greatest'of all steeplechasers is undoubtedly Lone Hand, and he is also a son of Panic. Postboy, Postman, Prodigious, and many other good cross country horses, too numerous to men* tion, are also descendants of the soa tb Alarm." Terms : L 5 os, payable Ist of January, 1879.
