Wellington bookbinders are starting a subscription on behalf of the seamen's antiChinese strike.
■ The permanent modified contract for the San Francisco mail service (that is, tlie one abolishing the forced service and the coastin"- by the ocean steamers) is expected to be signed by the end of the present month. °Kough plans for the new Supreme Courthouse and new R.M. Court are prepared. It is expected that Government will call for tenders in about six weeks. The buildings are to be in brick, with every convenience for the judges, the counsel, the press, and the public. A twenty-mile walking match took place to-day, under the auspices of the. Wellington Amateur Athletic Club. Lynch was first; time, 31i. 18m. 205.; Beswick second, 3h21m. 155.; Galbraith third, 3h. *26 in. 30s. Thirteen started, but only five finished the distance under four hours. December 15. A Supplementary Gazette last night publishes sections 15, 21, 33, 40, 57, and (5S of ;the Sheep Act, 187S, as coining into operation on the Ist of January, 1879. The Committee of ' the New Zealand Rifle Association will in a few days meet to draw up a programme for the' meeting at Nelson. 1 The schooner Torea has been launched and taken on to Picton for repairs. The Church of England body is about to organise a general church fund" for the diocese of Wellington, to. provide an adequate stipend for such a body of clergy as may be required, . and to build churches, parsonages, and schools, and train young men for the work of the ministry. It is proposed to raise the fund by certain graduated weekly subscriptions. DUNEDIN.. December 14. A wrestling match for LSO a-side and the Champion Belt of Otago took place this afternoon between John Tyson, the champion of Otago, and present holder of the belt, and Thomas, of Eagleliawk, Victoria, and champion of that colony. Thomas was the challenger, and came down to Otago and defeated Dagg for LIOO a-side, about a fortnight ago, 111 consequence of the victory which he then gained he was the favorite today, and both" lie and Tyson were loudly cheered on appearing in the ring. The eontest this time was to be decided by tlie best two out of three. Considerable play took place when the men came together, but it was evident they would never take "hold of their own notion, and when they were put together by the judges Tyson frequently slipped his hold, and liis wrestling throughbut was marked by great want of pluck, and the crowd hooted. However, by sheer brute force he twice in succession thruw Thomas, and during the struggle for the second fall almost choked him. Thomas wrestled very fairly and very gamely, and many believe that had Tyson done the same he would not have won. CHRISTCHUKCH. December 10. There "was a large attendance yesterday at the Volunteer -Fire Brigade church parade. ,They attended the Presbyterian Church, and ■comprised the Dunediu, Port Chalmers, (Momington, Waimate, Oamaru, Timaru, and Christchurcli Brigades. He was in the last of consumption, and no inquest will be held. - Mr. M'Kenna, late in charge of the Kaiapoi station, has been promoted to take charge of tlie station at Invercargill. Pinfire, Ramarama, Eversley, Fiction, Waiheke, and The Agent went North in the Hawca on Saturday, to attend the races at Blenheim and Auckland. In the match—eleven v. sixteen—on Saturday the display of cricket was by no moans good, as it was the first time the eleven had been in the field but they promise to make a good working •"team. The sixteen scored 118, and the eleven had two out for 22. A meeting of farmers and others was held on Saturday, when a Committee was appointed to consider the best means of continuing the corn exchange. A meeting of ratepayers of the Borough of Napier was held to-day, to consider the .question of raising a loan of L 70,000, so as to consolidate "the two existing loans, .and leave about L 53,000 for the drainage and sewerage scheme. Tlie meeting was presided over by the Mayor. . There was a good deal of discussion, but no resolution, was passed, the Act prescribing'that there shall be only conr. sideratiqu and discussion. The Mayor gave notice that a "poll would be taken on the 23rd instant, ... . , This morning- Judge Gillies gave his decision in Ban&J iii the important appeal case Russell v. Campbell. It was an appeal from a decision of the Trust Commissioner, wherein he refused to grant a certificate to !t deed of lease from Paul Keogh, the husband of Aurora, to the Hon. H. R. Russell, .she having in ISGS granted the lease to Hugh Campbell, his predecessor. Mr. Rees appeared for M r. Russell, and Messrs. M and Carlyle for Mr. Campbell. After heai> ing arguments, the Judge decided in favor of the appellant, Russell, and stated that the
