TTMARI7. * (From to-day's I'imaru Herald.) 'Die near approach of the holidays has pi von a slight stimulus to business, but the improvement is scarcely noticeable. The prolonged drought is being severely felt in all parts of the district, and the promise of a uplendid harvest that were held out at secdnowing have been totally dispelled. In some cases the young crops have been so far deatroyed that their recovery was despaired of, and sheep have been turned in upon them. This state of things will make a difference at harvest time in values, and we shall look for higher prices l-uling than we anticipated. There is no activity in the grain market, and prices remain nominal at former quotations. i 'onsiderable stocks, both of wheat and oats, still appear to be held by farmers, who are anxious to cpiit at anything like a reasonable price. The prices that farmers could get in town are about "s fid for wheat, and 3s Sd to Sa lld for oats. For good malting barley, f>s (id to ">s fld might be obtained if sample were really first-class.
