WAITAKI ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this Board was held yesterday, when the members present were—Messrs. Duncan (in the chair), Connell, Aitchison, Borrie, Easton, Procter, and Johnston. Mr. Oliver (Engineer) was in attendance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. A letter was received from the Town Clerk, acknowledging receipt of the resolution of the Board with reference to the bridges and culverts over the water-race. It was pointed out that the letter contained no reference to the alteration of the bridge at Georgetown, and it was resolved, " That the Clerk write to the Corporation, calling their attention to the fact that the application previously made by this Board has not been attended to, and recommending that the roadway be not less than 15ft. wide over bridges of this description, in view of their being required for the passage of reapers and binders.
The Clerk of the County Council -wrote stating that the Board's offer to contribute towards the salary of the ranger in the Papakaio Riding had been accepted, and it was thereupon decided that Mr. Smart (the ranger) should have authority under the seai ot 'the Board to impound all cattle found straying on district roads. A telegram was read from Mr. UnderSecretary Know-100, intimating that the proclamation taking road in Waiareka would be submitted to the Governor this week.
Mr. James Bee, the district valuer, having applied for instructions regarding the valuation of the Waterworks property, it was resolved that the valuer be instructed to value the ground occupied by the water-race, and then deduct the acreage of same from that of the several properties, A letter w r as read from Mr. J. 0. Gilchrist, asking that transfers for land taken for road purposes in block 1, Papakaio, be completed without further delay, and it was resolved that the money be paid on the necessary conditions being complied with. It was further resolved that Mr. Procter and the Clerk wait on the Solicitor to urge that this matter with that of other transfers be completed with as little delay as possible.
It was decided that at its next meeting the Board should proceed to the election of a member of the Harbor Board.
Tenders were opened for contracts 06 and 67j and the following were accepted : —Contract 66, works on boundary road, Thomas P s Wright, L 265 2s 7d ; contract 67, bridge at Papakaio, Biggar and Robertson, L 27 5s fid. The' Engineer's report on the width of the several bridges on roads in Weymouth subdivision was read, and it was ordered that between sections 173 and 162, block 11., Papakaio, be widened four feet to admit of the passage of harvesters. The members for the several subdivisions were directed to pay striot attention to the carrying on of contracts in their subdivisions, and see that they are carried out in accordance with the plans and specifications.
It was resolved that the members for the Awamoko subdivision be empowered to employ two daymen for a month or six weeks, in order to have the roads in that subdivision repaired. The "Engineer was authorised to have culverts laid down on road-line between sections 58 and 29, block 4, Awamoko; also, that he report on road-line to Mr. and from the main road to Jardine's via pre-emptive. Accounts amounting to Ll5O 17s 5d having been passed for payment, the Board rose.
